I have mixed feeling regarding STO these days. I'm not terribly fond of the Cryptic/PWE method of monetizing their celebration of Trek's 50th over the past month. Enough that I just haven't felt motivated to login to their game.

But to be fair Cryptic did release the console version of their game today. So I'm keeping this thread up-to-date.

This is a very special day in the history of sci-fi and pop culture. Today marks 50 years since the introduction of Star Trek to the world. The strength of this series is its optimism, of looking towards the future and seeing that we can be better than we are. That the petty disputes and differences of today can be resolved, and that everyone on earth, and beyond, can move forward together toward a brighter tomorrow. This message carries as much weight today as it did in 1966, and Star Trek continues to be a beacon of optimism, friendship, and collaboration all of these years later.

In celebration of this amazing achievement, Star Trek Online will be giving away the 23rd Century Bundle for free! We’re doing this for 24 hours, beginning today at 2pm Pacific time on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. This bundle includes the Class F Shuttle, the entire Original Series Ship Interior, the Command Tunic Uniform, the Medical Officer Uniform, the Formal Dress Uniform, as well as a TOS phaser weapon.

Live Long and Prosper!

Steve Ricossa
Executive Producer
Star Trek Online
This announcement wasn't made public until exactly 2pm pacific. When the offering was unlocked in the C-store. Call me a pessimist, but I really feel this was done as an afterthought. This bundle is pre-established content that most TOS fans bought years ago. And many new player's bought soon after the Agents of Yesterday expansion was released. I'm of the opinion that Cryptic made no plan for the day of the anniversary itself. Just all the lottery system offerings of the past month. Veteran player's and fans (who don't have that much extra cash lying around) are simply out of luck.

I didn't need a free gift from the company. Just something in the spirit of the anniversary which I could buy outright. Like a not-quite-endgame Constitution-class starship without the extra bells and whistles of the lottery version would have been refreshing. I'm simply not impressed in the slightest.

AmbassadorKael, STO Community Manager wrote:Hey folks,

As of March 1st, 2017, Star Trek Online will no longer be supporting Windows XP and Direct3D 9, or Video Cards with a Direct3D Hardware Feature Level less than 10.0. This decision was made in order to improve game performance and to optimize the player experience. In order to make this transition as smooth as possible, we have put together a quick FAQ.

What is the timeline for these changes?
You will have plenty of time to upgrade!
  • After December 5, 2016, if you are running on Windows XP or using Direct3D 9, or using a Video Card with a Direct3D Hardware Feature Level less than 10.0, the launcher will inform you of that fact.
  • After January 15, 2017 the launcher will change your game settings to use Direct3D 11 if your system is compatible with it.
  • As of March 1, 2017, Star Trek Online will no longer be supporting Windows XP and Direct3D 9, or Video Cards with a Direct3D Hardware Feature Level less than 10.0.

What Operating System should I be upgrading to?
For the best play experience, Cryptic Studios recommends Windows 10. Note that you will need a Video Card that supports Direct3D Hardware Feature Level 11.0 or better to play on Windows 10.

The game will run on Windows Vista SP2 or better, or Windows 7 or 8 as well. Be aware that Microsoft is discontinuing supporting for Windows Vista as of April 2017.

What cards should I be looking for if I have to upgrade?
For the best play experience, Cryptic Studios recommends a video card that supports Direct3D Feature Level 11.0 or better. This includes:
  • NVidia GeForce GTX 400 or better
  • ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5000 or better
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better
If you are budget conscious, any of the following cards will function. Many of these cards are several years old, but they will still provide a basic Star Trek Online experience.
  • NVidia GeForce 8000 or better
  • ATI/AMD Radeon HD 2000 or better
  • Intel G965M Express, or Intel HD Graphics 2000 or better
Above all, take a close look at the Video Card manufacturer’s documentation for any card you are going to purchase, and ensure that the card specifically says it supports Direct3D Hardware Feature Level 10 or higher.

Please feel free to discuss this change in this thread, and let us know any further questions. We will be updating this thread with any additional notices or clarifications as needed.

Please note: For those of you currently having issues with your Direct 3D9 cards, Cryptic is still looking into a fix for that particular issue.

After six years, it's refreshing to see someone showcase the starships that a player can acquire through casual leveling up within the game. At no cost whatsoever to the player. None of these are endgame worthy. Depending on one's playstyle that detail simply may not matter.

phpBB [media]

The Reconnaissance Science Vessel (sometimes shortened to Recon or RSV) is an Admiral (Tier 5) level Federation Science Vessel. This one is based upon the hero ship found in the Titan series of novels. The Luna-class USS Titan is Will Riker's command following his service under Picard.

phpBB [media]

The Exploration Cruiser is a Captain level (Tier 4) Federation Cruiser. The most prominent Exploration Cruiser variant is the Galaxy-class USS Enterprise-D. Which was the flagship of the Starfleet when it was first introduced in the late 2350s.

These videos showcase the costume (skin) options. You can mix and match the components (Hull, Saucer, Nacelle, Struts) between all three variants to create something original. Or stick to the canon presentation.

STAR TREK ONLINE CELEBRATES
7th ANNIVERSARY
WITH SEASON 12 – RECKONING

Update Arrives January 26 with Featured Episode, New Space Queues and More

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – January 11, 2017 – Today, Perfect World Entertainment Inc., a leading publisher of free-to-play MMORPGs, and Cryptic Studios announced Star Trek Online will kick off its 7th Anniversary with the release of Season 12 – Reckoning. The newest chapter to the 100% free-to-play MMORPG based on the classic Star Trek franchise releases on PC January 26 and on Xbox One and PlayStation®4 at a later date. Season 12 celebrates Star Trek Online’s upcoming anniversary with giveaways and mini-games, plus two new space queues, a new Research and Development System category and a featured episode titled “Of Signs and Portents.”

This year’s anniversary event for Star Trek Online offers captains the opportunity to complete in-game missions to earn exciting rewards, including the new Tier 6 Lukari Science Vessel, which the community selected the design for last fall. Players can also participate in two daily missions (Omega Molecule Stabilization Daily and Party Patrol) to earn special rewards and play the Omega Molecule Stabilization mini-game with Q to earn materials to construct crafting kits. Festivities also include server-wide giveaways for in-game items, which will take place soon on a daily basis leading up to the anniversary event release.

Season 12 – Reckoning continues the mission from Star Trek Online’s latest update, Agents of Yesterday: Artifacts. Under the leadership of Captain Kuumaarke, the Lukari have set out on a journey to investigate some unusual activity in an unexplored region of the Alpha Quadrant. Upon further inspection, they discover data that suggests weaponized use of protomatter. Fearing the Tzenkethi are behind this, they put out a call for help to the Alliance, who tasks captains from across the galaxy to help the Lukari prevent a looming cataclysmic attack.

Mission details for Season 12 – Reckoning will be revealed in the new featured episode, “Of Signs and Portents,” which will also feature the game’s first appearance of General Rodek, voiced by actor Tony Todd. The update also unlocks an expansive amount of content for captains to explore, including a new reputation, a new crafting school in the R&D System to create kits and modules, two brand-new space queues (“Gravity Kills” and “The Tzenkethi Front”) and a full space battlezone that has the Alliance pitting itself against the Tzenkethi in a desperate bid to stop the production and deployment of protomatter weapons.

Star Trek Online is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online game where players can pioneer their own destiny as Captain of a Federation starship, become a Klingon Warrior and champion the Empire through the far reaches of the galaxy, or rebuild the Romulan legacy as the commander of a Romulan Republic Warbird. In Star Trek Online, players have the opportunity to visit iconic locations from the popular Star Trek universe, reach out to unexplored star systems and make contact with new alien species. Star Trek Online is currently available on PC, PlayStation®4 and Xbox One.

Huh. The Devs have said for years that Doug Drexler's Universe-class starship, seen briefly on television as the Enterprise-J would never appear in STO. It would simply be to enormous to be practical for player use on space maps in the game. So I'm assuming this change has something to do with the end of Windows XP support and changes in minimum specs to play the game.

Star Trek Online has been live for just over seven years at this point, during which time we have been adding and updating new content to play, new systems to interact with, and new mechanics to utilize. Recently, we announced balance changes coming to Star Trek Online. Now, we’re excited to tell you about some of the bigger changes coming to space combat in the game, and some of the reasoning behind them.

Given the opportunity to make such drastic changes to Star Trek Online’s experience, it was important to setup some guiding principles to ensure that the game, as much as possible, only gets better.

The goals boil down to these:
  • Increase the fun – Games are about having fun, and players should not be made to feel that their fun is “wrong.”
  • Player investment retains value – While things need to be adjusted, a setup that was optimized before should still be useful and effective afterwards.
  • Choices should be meaningful – Anywhere the game gives you a choice, there should be no choice that you always take nor one you never take.
One of the great strengths of Star Trek Online’s combat system is how expansive it is, and the freedom it gives players to choose the combinations of items and abilities that gives them the playstyle that they want. The vast number of choices already in-game means that as we re-visit the utility and strength of various options, players will have the opportunity to re-discover a lot of abilities and items they may have cast aside, and some things that you already use should become a lot more fun and enjoyable to use.

Carrier Pets are getting some significant changes that should make them feel much more useful in space combat. All Carrier Pets:
  • Have received updated AI to be more responsive.
  • Are immune to one torpedo every 30 seconds.
  • Are unaffected by Warp Core Breaches.
  • Receive a health and damage increase. Carrier Pets that already have Scratch the Paint have received a few other buffs to account for this.
Weapons are undergoing a lot of changes targeted at making the various types and firing modes more relevant. Beam Overload no longer always critically hits, but has had its damage increased, and additionally gives your basic attacks with beam weapons a significant amount of bonus damage and critical severity for a short duration after being activated.

Fire at Will now has a slight penalty to the weapon’s damage instead of an increase at ranks II and III, and has an accuracy debuff as well.

The Target Subsystem powers have been re-designed; they now enable all of your energy weapons to place a stacking power drain debuff on the target, and have a chance to take the target’s relevant subsystem offline.

Kinetic weaponry has received some changes as well. Targetable torpedoes now fly faster, and both targetable torpedoes and mines are no longer affected by “Hazard” abilities such as Gravity Well or Tyken’s Rift. This should make them feel less sluggish and eliminate situations where they would detonate instantly on launch, while still allowing time for them to be actually shot down.

The different careers have received several changes, mostly focused on increasing the effectiveness of Engineering and Science captains. Here are a few highlights:
  • Subnucleonic Beam is now a Lieutenant Commander or higher Science Bridge Officer Power. In its place, Science Captains now gain Deflector Overcharge, which significantly increases outgoing healing, exotic damage, control abilities, and drain abilities for a short duration.
  • The combat effectiveness of allies summoned by Photonic Fleet has been significantly increased.
  • Miracle Worker’s healing is significantly increased, and now also gives a significant amount of Secondary Shielding for a short duration.
  • EPS Power Transfer now also gives the target an increase to all Maximum Subsystem Power Levels for the duration. This can be stacked with other increases to Maximum Subsystem Power Levels.
There are a few other very significant changes coming with this patch:
  • All abilities that reflect damage now deal the damage type they are reflecting.
  • Reflected damage can no longer critically hit or be buffed by damage increases.
  • All "Hot Restart" powers that automatically remove a subsystem offline can no longer apply more than once per 60 seconds.
  • All holds now give their target hold resistance for a short duration when they end.
  • All disables now give their target disable resistance for a short duration when they end.
  • All player damage immunities now place a 15 second lockout on you, during which you cannot activate or otherwise be affected by any more damage immunities, and are all now “buffs” that can be removed.
  • The equation used to determine how weapons power influences your damage has been changed to a higher benefit at low power levels than before, and the same benefit as before at 100 weapons power, and slightly less while above.
The list of changes goes beyond what can be called out in this blog, and includes a large amount of changes to other abilities and items not mentioned here. The full list of initial changes will be in a Tribble patch in the near future, which we will be keeping a close eye on for feedback and issues.

Clearly, there are a lot of significant mechanics changes that have happened in this patch. To aid in answering questions about these and centralizing some of the answers, I will be holding a “Mechanics AMA” on the forums and on the Stobuilds Reddit in the near future to answer questions about how things now work.

NOTE: The above changes are all subject to change.

“First Contact Day”

Stardate 88258.9, Bozeman, Montana

“I often wonder how humanity managed to emerge from the 21st century with a functional sense of hearing.” Chief Medical Officer Savel stared icily at the local source of sonic discomfort, a single eyebrow arched in disapproval. “The volume level from this… noise box is several decibels above a safe, optimal range.”

Science Officer Tem smiled widely at the Vulcan physician’s comments. “It’s called a ‘jukebox,’ Doctor. I believe the staff is attempting to create an authentic 2063 experience for the visitors. Several of Doctor Cochrane’s favorites are in there, if memory serves.”

“Clearly, Cochrane’s genius was limited to warp theory and engineering, not music.” Savel moved to join his fellow officers at their table within the Crash-n-Burn Bar – or, rather, a recreation of that establishment, circa April, 2063. The original didn’t make it out of that tumultuous era intact, unlike its most famous customer.

“I enjoy this music. There was something similar on Cait during that time period as well,” Tactical Officer Kyona took a sip of her drink while regarding the doctor with amusement. “Our version is faster… with more shouting and hissing.”

“I amend my previous statement to include Caitians,” replied Savel. “Who, by the composition of the beverage you are currently consuming, are fond of damaging their livers as well as their hearing.”

“My father would love this drink,” Kyona grinned, her long tail twitching with glee. “He brews his own beer back on the farm, but it doesn’t have a kick like this!”

“There’s reactor coolant that doesn’t have a kick like this,” Tem replied after taking a sip of her own drink and wrinkling her nose. “This stuff could flatten a raging Nausicaan!”

Savel looked around the bar, focusing on the numerous patches and plaques on display. “The décor is far more interesting than the music or the libations,” he said after a moment. “It is mission heraldry from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, late-20th to mid-21st century. Evidence that science and logic weren’t completely alien to humanity at that time.”

“Early space programs of Earth… some of my favorite reading at the Academy,” Tem said thoughtfully. “NASA took ‘going boldly’ to a new level back in those days. For my money, the Apollo 13 simulation is far more challenging than the Kobayashi Maru.”

“I confess to having a certain nostalgic interest in this place,” mused Savel. “My wife’s mother served with a member of the T’Plana-Hath’s crew. I had the honor of meeting him once, before his passing.”

Tem’s eyebrows raised in surprise. “I had no idea! That’s amazing, Savel. You met one of the first Vulcans to make First Contact with humans! He must have had a few stories to tell.”

“Indeed,” Savel replied. “His impression of Doctor Cochrane was… memorable.”

“I can imagine,” Tem replied. “The man was a little notorious at times.”

“It takes a certain kind of character to sit on top of a missile with a warp drive prototype inside and hit the ignition switch,” said Kyona. “Cochrane had that kind of character, notorious or not.”

“He’s lucky to have survived,” said Tem. “From what I’ve read, it’s a miracle the Phoenix made it off the ground, let alone into space.”

“If I recall today’s event schedule clearly,” Savel said. “You’ll have your chance to replicate the flight, although in miniature form.”

“That’s right! They do that every year… people build a replica of the Phoenix, using parts hidden on the grounds, then launch it,” replied Tem with a sideways grin. “I’ve always wanted to try that. O’Brien and his Engineering team took first place last year, and he’s been smug about it ever since.”

“We should do it!” Kyona’s whiskers twitched with enthusiasm. “All of us… even you, Doctor!”

“I fail to see why my participation in this event is necessary,” Savel replied. “The crew of Enterprise-F is already well-represented.”

“Think of it as representing Vulcan, Doctor,” Tem said with a wink to Kyona. “Channeling a little ‘First Contact spirit,’ if you will.”

“Very well,” Savel said after a moment’s thought. “I shall consider participation as a pursuit of infinite diversity in infinite combinations.”

“Excellent! Here’s to victory!” Tem said as she clinked her mug together with Kyona’s in celebration.

“Participation will also provide me with the opportunity to be far from this disturbing cacophony.” Savel added dryly. “If you’ll excuse me, I shall register each of us for the next event.”

As Savel left the Crash-n-Burn, Tem grinned at Kyona and chuckled.

“Well, I know what I’m getting him for his next birthday,” she said. “A vintage copy of Zefram Cochrane’s Favorites, preferably on vinyl.”

“I’ll help,” replied Kyona impishly. “Another round?”

“I’ll pass. I’d like to be able to walk in a straight line when it’s time for the event, thanks.”

Season 13, ESCALATION is LIVE. With notes too numerous to cross-post. Here's the link.

Today's follow-up from the game's current Producer:
Season 13 is here, and it’s packed with exciting new content for everyone! Earlier in the year, the Tzenkethi were revealed, and they are making more dangerous plays in the Alpha Quadrant as they devastate planets, seemingly at random. The Alliance needs to continue to explore the space surrounding the Tzenkethi advance to try and determine a pattern to their attacks. With our new featured episode “Mirrors and Smoke,” captains will work with the Lukari as they explore a mysterious nebula and discover the secrets within. The mystery of the Tzenkethi continues in Season 13 while new mysteries of the Lukari are discovered!

On top of this amazing story line, the new Wargame queues will offer players a brand new type of competitive PvE gameplay. Two teams of five players will compete against each other in a gauntlet filled with minigame challenges and enemy NPCs as they race to be the first team to complete all of their challenges. In order to maintain a competitive landscape, we’ve instituted a new Player Performance System that will take player gear and ability into account in order to keep captains matched with captains of similar skills. These types of gameplay and matchmaking improvements are completely unique in the history of STO, and I can’t wait for the community to get their hands on it.

We are also offering some brand new reputation rewards to go with our new Wargame queues, featuring - for the first time - class-specific gear for space. Each of these three sets are themed towards different aspects of the game from offensive capability, to survivability, to general support, and they can all be mixed and matched to create the custom set of gear that fits your style of play best. Of course, a reputation wouldn’t be complete without a new ground armor set, and we are offering three visual styles based on our three factions. Each of these armor sets can be customized with the others, so there are fantastic options for our players to individualize their look on the ground.

In order to ensure our captains are always making good choices when equipping gear or selecting skills, we’ve completed a space rebalance for Season 13. In the same vein as the ground updates from earlier this year, the goal of the space balance changes is to normalize outliers on the top and bottom of the power curve without adjusting too much of the middle that is already working well. These changes were thoroughly tested and regularly iterated on with the help of all of our captains on the test shard, and we believe they will provide a more balanced and exciting experience for everyone.

Season 13: Escalation has been a labor of love for the STO development team, and we’ve had a lot of fun playtesting everything that you’re getting today. With a continuation of our great Tzenkethi storyline, new types of gameplay, and some high quality, brand new rewards, there is definitely something for everyone in this update.

Thanks for playing, and I look forward to seeing you in game!

“Are you certain? Run the scans again.” Kuumaarke sat alert in her captain’s chair.

“Captain, I’ve scanned it three times and double checked the data each of those times. There is no doubt in my mind at this point,” Becaal, chief science officer of the L.S.S. Reskava, excitedly gave his report to his superior. “The Gon’cra Nebula is synthetic, and according to our scans it hasn’t been around for more than two, three hundred years, tops.” The implications of this information were astounding. He knew his captain, a fellow scientist, fully grasped the situation.

“So it’s an artificial nebula and a recently made one at that! I don’t think our friends in the Alliance have any data on such a phenomenon. We may have actually discovered something completely new here…” Kuumaarke’s mind was reeling. “But why? Why would anyone make a nebula?”

“Speaking completely hypothetically, Captain? Nebulas are known navigational hazards to most species capable of interstellar travel. Traveling through one isn’t usually advisable, especially when you can simply navigate around them to advance.”

“Go on,” said Kuumaarke, listening intently.

“That being said, a nebula would be a good place to hide something… or a lot of somethings. A navigational hazard that scrambles or jams most sensors, is difficult to travel through, and could severely damage or destroy your ship? Such a thing would make for great camouflage under certain conditions.”

“I see your point. Intriguing.”

“Unless you take proper precautions… modify your shielding and life support, enhance your sensor suite… going into a nebula is a risky proposition at best. The average passerby would probably just fly by and say ‘Oh look, a nebula’ without noticing anything of interest was hidden in there... if they bothered to look at all.” Becaal had obviously been thinking this through while running his scans.

Kuumaarke smiled. “Whoever made this nebula has something they want to hide. But this is too fascinating to leave be. Let’s call our friends. I think they’ll want to see this, too.”

  • With the threat of the Tzenkethi looming overhead, a new mystery presents itself. On Tuesday, April 25th, experience our latest featured episode “Mirrors and Smoke” and discover the secrets of the Gon’cra Nebula. “Mirrors and Smoke” comes out with Season 13 “Escalation”, and continues our “New Frontiers” storyline. It includes great rewards that you can earn over the course of several weeks.

For a limited time, “Mirrors and Smoke” will be available to all players level 10 and up (Romulan players must have selected a faction). After this, it will be in our normal mission journal progression.

I was playing around with customization for my new Reliant-class Light Escort. When I came up with something I felt looked familiar. Below is the wireframe graphic which teased the USS Shenzhou for the new Star Trek streaming series. Follows is what I tossed together in coincidence.

LARGER VERSION of event map

https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star- ... t-on-pc%21
It is time again for Risa’s annual Lohlunat Festival, and with it some much needed R&R for Captains. From June 8th to July 20th, the residents of Suraya Bay and the Lobi Crystal Consortium have once again partnered together to bring festival participants the highest quality wares, including exchanging Lohlunat Prize Vouchers (2017) for the new Vorgon Ryn’Kodan Carrier [T6]. A Dev Blog containing full stats and description for the starship will be published separately, so keep your eyes open for it.

This year Star Trek Online is inviting Captains to participate in a brand new event: The Biathlon! This exciting all-new race combines two favorite Risa activities – hoverboard racing and floater flying. Races will begin twice an hour at 30 minutes past and 50 minutes past the hour.

With the addition of the Biathlon event, we’re adding some new powerboards and floaters into the summer event store. We’ve also added some new costumes and Caracals, along with Training manuals and a Universal Kit Module. New store offerings can be purchased for Lohlunat Favors, earned by participating in various events around the island. Players may access the Event Store by completing the “Unlock the Summer Event Prize Vendor” Event Reputation project to earn:

Tiger Striped Risian Caracals (Vanity Pets)
  • The Risian Tiger-Striped Caracal is a small animal native to the planet Risa. Different colors of Tiger-Striped Caracals are available from the Summer Event Store and the Lobi Store.
Floaters and Powerboards (Ground Devices)
  • With the addition of the new Biathlon event, we’re releasing new Gold, Silver, and Bronze Floaters and Powerboards. Captains will need to place First, Second, or Third place in the Biathlon to gain access to them in the store. Each of the new Floaters and Powerboards have the same features as the existing Superior models.
Rash Guards (Swimwear)
  • This year we’re introducing Rash Guard swimwear! Surf the waves in style, Captain!

Thought this was rather cool. STO art devs, ThomasTheCrypticCat (Ship Art Lead) and Tacofangs (Lead Enviroment Artist) attended Trekonderoga over the weekend. A Star Trek con held on the New Voyages fan film sets. Now known more officially as The Star Trek Tour. Samuel Cockings from the Trekyards Youtube channel was filming there as well.

Here we have Thomas, dressed in his usual Engineering uniform, playing Star Trek Online while sitting in the Captain's chair of the TOS bridge. The game is right there on the main viewer.

“How is it that I have only one eye, but I can see more clearly than anyone around me?” –Martok, Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek Online is very pleased to announce the newest addition to our cast- J.G. Hertzler, reprising the role of Martok, the former Klingon Chancellor that he made famous in the beloved series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Martok was originally brought into DS9 as a brief guest star, but Hertzler’s portrayal led to him becoming a fan favorite who eventually became a recurring character. The Klingon General proved instrumental in the war with the Dominion, helping Worf and the crew of Deep Space Nine fend off legions of Jem’Hadar ships, and even endured three years of torture at the hands of the Dominion’s elite soldiers. Martok gained such renown in the war that then-Chancellor Gowron felt he was a threat to the throne, and attempted to discredit and, eventually, kill him. Worf challenged Gowron and defeated him, but turned down the honor of becoming Chancellor, instead granting it to his friend, Martok.

As far as the Galaxy knows, Martok is dead – having been killed in an honor duel for the position of Chancellor by J’mpok in 2393. Where has he been for the last eighteen years? And what role will he play in the world of 2410? All of this will be revealed in an upcoming update to Star Trek Online.

Check out our interview with J.G. Hertzler, where he talks about returning to the role of Martok and how Klingons are like football players, right here:

Awesome interview!

Color me pleasantly surprised. Martok was only written as backhistory for STO all these years. Assumed to have died during a Klingon challenge. Mysteriously. Behind closed doors. No witnesses. What I didn't understand was that the House of Martok never had a body to honor after that event.

This means that over ten years of bloody conflict that shattered the Khitomer Accords might never have happened. Making Chancellor J'mpok the ultimate traitor to the Empire.

io9 offers a current review of the game.

http://io9.gizmodo.com/the-best-look-at ... 1811171544
The Best Look at the Future of the Star Trek Universe Comes From a Video Game

Star Trek: Discovery is set 10 years before the events of the original Star Trek, but that wasn’t always going to be the case. It was almost an anthology show that was going to take fans from the pre-Kirk Federation into Star Trek’s future. If you’re disappointed Discovery is solely stuck in the past instead, you really should play Star Trek Online.

First released in 2010, STO is an online RPG in the vein of World of Warcraft or Star Wars: The Old Republic. Here, players create a Captain (Federation, Klingon, or Romulan), recruit a bridge crew, and then jet off in their own space ship to boldly go where... well, all the other players are going, too. The game went free-to-play a few years after its release, and has been supported regularly with new expansions and storylines ever since, even including an expansion from PC to current consoles.

As an MMORPG, it’s a decent time. The ground combat sucks (frankly, no one’s really into Trek for the boots-on-the-ground phaser shootouts anyway), but the space combat has a nice, almost naval feel to it that does a great job of making you feel like you’re captaining a Star Trek vessel. But the primary draw of the game is the story: right now, Star Trek Online is the only licensed Trek product that’s set after the events of Deep Space Nine and Voyager. (That includes books; there are currently no new books on the schedule set in that time.) Hell, it’s the only Star Trek story set after the opening events of the 2009 reboot movie, in the wake of Spock’s disappearance from the prime timeline and the destruction of Romulus and Remus. And while, as a spinoff, the canon status of the game is hazy at best, it does let fans explore the aftermath in a way nothing else can.

Star Trek Online concentrates on continuing the original Star Trek timeline after the events seen in the original shows and movies. Like DS9 before it, it mostly began with an examination of how a utopian society like the Federation copes in the face of a dire scenario that pushes its ideals to the limits. After all, it is a video game—you need some avenues of conflict so people can go blow things up!

In the early days of Star Trek Online, the Alpha Quadrant is in crisis. The Star Empire is reeling from the devastating loss of its homeworld, and eventually falls into disrepute as Sela—the half-Romulan daughter of an alternate universe Tasha Yar from The Next Generation—overthrows it to become its Empress, and attempts to hunt down and end the fledgling Romulan Republic while it builds a new home away from the controlling eyes of the Romulan secret police, the Tal Shiar.

A strained Federation and the Klingon Empire find themselves heading toward war, as a greedy new Klingon chancellor sees the Romulans’ loss as a potential land grab for their empire. As if that wasn’t enough for Starfleet to deal with, a resurgent Borg begins probing the Alpha Quadrant, and there are new conflicts with Voyager’s Species 8472—named here as the “Undine”—looking to destroy Federation and Klingons alike.

Although the game begins in an un-Trek-ish war campaign, STO’s story eventually turns into something with themes and messages you’d expect from a Star Trek tale, focusing on protecting the ideals of compassion and unity from threats that would destroy them. The Federation and Klingon Empire eventually re-ally when they find that they’ve been duped into conflict by the shadowy Iconian race (itself a deep-cut Trek reference, having been briefly mentioned in episodes of DS9 and TNG), who turn out to be the actual big villains of the game’s early storyline.

After the newly formed Romulan Republic becomes willing to work with both factions as well, the game’s story started exploring the Star Trek universe in its 25th century in earnest—exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations, and battling the Borg, of course.

Announced as part of Star Trek’s 50th anniversary a few years ago, Discovery—which premieres September 24—has something of a nostalgic air to it. Even though it’s got snazzy new uniforms and borrows a few pages out of the aesthetic of the rebooted movies, it plays with the beloved past of Star Trek as a franchise. It’s got the classic flip communicators and the old school phasers, and it has presented itself as a window into the time just before Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the Enterprise crew made history.

Meanwhile, Star Trek Online has been exploring the future ramifications of all those past TV series in some interesting and unique ways.

Speaking of the aforementioned alt-Tasha Yar, a brief game plotline sees players cross paths with the Enterprise-C of “Yesterday’s Enterprise,” helping the crew back into their ill-fated timeline. An extended storyline set around Deep Space Nine and Bajor not only catches up with the current state of the Cardassians and the Dominion, decades after the war for the Gamma and Alpha Quadrants that formed the backbone of Deep Space Nine’s latter half, it even at one point answers the question of what the hell actually happened to that fleet of Dominion warships Sisko got the Prophets to disappear in “Sacrifice of Angels” (they dumped it into the “present” of the game, because the Prophets are assholes).

Another early story even follows up with Miral Paris, the daughter of Tom and B’Elanna from Voyager, who ended up being pegged as part of a bizarre Klingon prophecy in one episode of the show. And a whole expansion of content for the game saw players return to the Delta Quadrant, seeing the ramifications of the alliances and enemies the U.S.S. Voyager made during its time there 30 years beforehand.

You even get to work alongside famous Trek characters during a bunch of these stories—often voiced by their actual actors, including Denise Crosby (both Tasha Yar and Sela) and Michael Dorn (Worf); like, half the primary cast of Voyager; and even most recently LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge). All reprise their roles as players get to catch up with what these characters did after their respective series came to a close.

With Enterprise, the rebooted movies, and now Discovery, Star Trek has spent over a decade indulgently examining its past, alternate or otherwise. STO is just as nostalgic and deeply filled with connections to Trek past as you’d expect of any particularly fanservice-y production. But it’s also been looking to the future of these characters and stories instead of simply mining them for a fan-friendly reference or six.

It’s kind of weird that right now, in the franchise’s 51st year, a video game has been the only real window into what Star Trek’s future might look like—something I, like many other fans, hoped to see out of Discovery when it was first announced. But as far as windows go, the view has been surprisingly enjoyable.

Wild speculation has unfolded over at the STO Reddit and STO forum. Due to testers having discovered files to support a 64-bit client for the game. Testers with 32-bit OS couldn't even get the game client to launch. Unless they found the Option to switch from 64 back to 32. I suspect something got into the current test build too soon.

As the Devs aren't talking, I suspect they are doing away with any 32-bit OS support to roll out next summer. Which would coincide with any expected expansion release.

Even as the Eighth Anniversary for the game is unfolding, a new Lockbox is incoming which will import the visual style of the streaming television series, Star Trek Discovery, firmly into STO.

I mean, it had to happen eventually. I just assumed it wouldn't until the first season had actually completed broadcast. Of all the offering, I am most interested in the Walker-class. Which isn't really in the lockbox, but is an outright purchase from their Lobi Store. Lobi come from the opening of Lockboxes. :P
