Captain Nog reports for duty!

Star Trek Online is pleased to announce that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine star Aron Eisenberg will be joining the cast of Star Trek Online to reprise his role as Nog.

In his time on Deep Space Nine, Nog changed from a troubled youth to be the first Ferengi to enter Starfleet Academy. Later, his time in the Dominion War scarred him both physically and emotionally, as he experienced first-hand the horrors of combat.

Since the end of the Dominion War, Nog has stayed in Starfleet and worked his way up the ranks. He served time on several exploration missions, returned to DS9 for a tour as chief engineer, and then moved to Utopia Planitia to work with the Starfleet Corps of Engineers. Now he commands the SCE ship U.S.S. Chimera. And like all Starfleet captains in this troubled time, Nog is stepping up to do what he can to help defend the galaxy from the Iconians.

Captain Nog will be joining you to face off against the Iconians and their Heralds soon.

Each week we’ll be rolling out an additional reward for the Featured Episode “Time in a Bottle."

This week’s reward is the Chroniton Split Beam Rifle. In addition, the first completion of “Time in a Bottle” on an account this week will grant a Featured Episode Weekly Reward box. The weekly reward box gives your choice of an Enhanced Universal Tech Upgrade or a Captain Specialization Point, which gives the character who opens the box a Specialization Point. The weekly reward box, tech upgrade, and specialization point box are all Bound to Account, and may be freely traded between your characters. The Specialization Point box requires the opening character to be level 50 or above. Finally, the first completion of “Time in a Bottle” will unlock the Dance (Ferengi) emote. This dance can be performed through the Emotes menu, or using the command /emote Dance_Ferengi.

Modified by Captain Nog, the Chroniton Split Beam Rifle fires concentrated streams of Chroniton radiation. Its weapons fire deals Antiproton-type damage, with a chance to reduce the Run Speed and Power Recharge Speed of targets. The rifle’s secondary fire can target up to three enemies in a cone, triggering an Exploit Attack. Players will receive the Chroniton Split Beam Rifle at a rank-appropriate Mark, and it can be freely upgraded to Mk XII. Further upgrades will require technology points and Dilithium as normal.

Next week we’ll reveal week two’s reward for “Time in a Bottle.” Stay tuned!

We've had some problematic hardware in our network for some time, but have had trouble triaging exactly the best way to deal with the issue. The malfunctioning hardware has been the cause of regular stability issues on Holodeck for some time, but we needed a solid plan for replacing and integrating something new. The extra maintenance Tuesday and the extended maintenance today enabled us to completely replace the problematic hardware and integrate replacements. This update is nothing but great news for every Cryptic game, including STO. The maintenance was successful but took significantly longer to complete than we'd hoped. Again, I truly apologize for the inconvenience.

As I mentioned before I know how frustrating it can be when a game you want to play is down. My goal is to ensure everyone in the community can get into the game, have fun things to play when they're in there, and earn great rewards. Since the game is up now I'm going to make good on the other two goals right now. From shortly after this post through Monday at 10 a.m. we'll be running a 75% Dilithium Bonus weekend, the Elachi Red Alert event which includes a 50% mark bonus to marks awarded by that event, and I'll be extending the Summer Event by a day for those that couldn't get in today. I hope these bonuses, and our continued commitment to creating a smooth and stable play experience will make up for this necessary but unfortunately long downtime. Thank you for your patience, and I look forward to seeing all of you in game this weekend!

[STO] Season 10.5 Preview: Small Fleets Rejoice!

Season 10.5 Preview: Small Fleets Rejoice!

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game ... leets.html

Star Trek Online players have been enjoying the Iconian War story arc for a while now, a storyline that has been building for the past five years. Cryptic Studios will be bringing that particular tale to a close in the near(ish) future, though epic stories from all of the iconic television series are waiting in the wings. In fact, there is content over content that is coming throughout the balance of this year and even things that will be revealed in the coming months that will not seem to play a big part until later in 2016.

In between major stories, generally introduced through expansions such as Delta Rising last fall, Cryptic puts out mid-season updates that have been becoming larger and larger over the years. Half-season updates tend to be more on focused on system updates, but occasionally a big feature wends its way into one that gives players something wickedly awesome to both look forward to and to experience once the update goes live. Be sure that Season 10.5 will give players lots to explore.

STO’s Lead Designer Al Rivera took some time out of his busy schedule to talk with MMORPG about what’s next in the mid-season update for players.

The Armada System
For the Season 10.5 update, Cryptic will be adding the Armada System – a huge enhancement to the Fleet System.

For those who don’t know, the Fleet System is essentially the STO version of guilds and can be anywhere from 5-500 players. Fleets get a number of neat perks, including a starbase and a number of additional holdings – an embassy, a dilithium mine – and projects that everyone in the fleet contributes to. In addition, players can gain access to Fleet Starships, some of the most powerful ships in the game.

All this is great, but over time, Cryptic noticed that Fleets had a significant shortcoming: Getting the balance right between larger and smaller groups. Small fleets are frustrated by the inability to complete projects while large fleets complete them so fast that players don’t have time to contribute and don’t earn credits to purchase special items from fleet vendors.

“We wanted to address this with the Armada system. Fleets can join together. Fleets can pledge fealty to one above them. Each can have three below them, each of those can have three, up to thirteen fleets total.” Al explained. “There are no size requirements whatsoever to form an Armada. It encourages larger fleets to be alphas, smaller on the bottom for the best bonuses, but that is not a requirement, neither is a “full” Armada of thirteen required.”

Image

When asked if Armadas could be formed of thirteen tiny Fleets and then reorganized from time to time to place groups in different tiers, Al said that, while the team had considered such a notion in the planning stages, it was not something included in the upcoming 10.5 update.
There are a number of reasons why the combining of Fleets into an Armada is a boon to both ends of the population spectrum:
  • A larger community
  • Larger fleets can contribute to their beta or gamma fleets
  • All get bonuses – skill point bonus and dilithium discounts are based on the combined level of all fleets in the Armada and where each sits within the hierarchy. Gammas get the largest dilithium discount as they need it the most. Conversely, they get a smaller skillpoint bonus. Alphas earn smaller dilithium discounts, but get a greater skillpoint bonus. Mid-tier betas betas get a balance of both.
Image

Armadas Aren’t All That’s Coming
Fleets will also have some other great things coming with 10.5 including a new Fleet holding, the Krenim Holding. Krenim offers a new space based research outpost to earn a lot of new rewards and comes just in time for the Armada system.

Additionally, Fleet leaders will be able to export to a spreadsheet all kinds of member data including ranks and promotions, contributions, time in game and so on.

10.5 will come with a new episode and feature Aron Eisenberg. He appeared in this new episode. His story continues in the next featured episode. We release one every 4-5 weeks and every time it’s released, there are special rewards during that time and there are special rewards too.

“There will be additional episodes that will come out over time, more celebrities that we’ve recorded the VO for already. Some characters from the past will make a reappearance. There will be some surprises, some favorites who will make a return.”

“And let’s not forget that there will be things happening now that will extend beyond the Iconian War and all the way in to 2016. We are tying content in to the actual shows themselves. Our stories are always something from one of the series. We’re always anchored in advancing stories that audiences may not have gotten the full story when watching.”

http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-t ... et-armadas

Fleet leaders have been asking for improvements to Star Trek Online's Fleet system. We've listened, and the new Armada system that will go live in a future update is intended to help larger Fleets organize as well as giving an option for smaller Fleets who want to band together and help one another out. Here's how it works:
Fleets will soon be able join together to form vast Armadas to share resources and speed up the construction of Fleet Holdings. Armadas are composed of a top level Fleet, called the Alpha Fleet, which can invite up to three other Fleets to become subordinate Beta Fleets. These Beta Fleets can additionally each invite up to three other Fleets to become their subordinate Gamma Fleets, allowing for a maximum Armada size of thirteen Fleets.

All Fleets in an Armada share a new Armada chat channel, and can contribute resources to the Fleet Projects of any other Fleet in the Armada. Fleets will be able to control which projects other Fleets are allowed to donate to, and will be able to control both what resources their Fleet members can donate to other Fleets and what resources other Fleets can donate to them.

All Fleets in an Armada will receive bonuses that increase based on the total Fleet level of all Fleets in the Armada. These bonuses may include Dilithium discounts for Fleet projects or bonus Skill Points. These rewards will also vary based on a Fleet’s position in the Armada, with Alpha Fleets receiving a higher Skill Point bonus than Beta and Gamma Fleets, and Gamma Fleets receiving a higher Dilithium discount than Alpha and Beta Fleets.

However, the Alpha Fleet of an Armada does not have complete control over all of the Fleets in its Armada. The Alpha Fleet can only invite or kick the Beta Fleets directly under it. Beta Fleets in turn are the only Fleets that can invite or kick the three Gamma Fleets under them. Additionally, if a Beta Fleet leaves or is kicked out of an Armada, the Beta Fleet will take all of its Gamma Fleets with them, and will become the Alpha Fleet of a newly-formed Armada, with its Gamma Fleets becoming Beta Fleets.

While any Fleet can leave an Armada at any time, joining an Armada is a big commitment. Any Fleet that joins an Armada will not be able to participate in any of the bonuses or Armada contributions until a probationary period has passed. During this probationary period, any leader of the Fleet above it can kick them out of the Armada with no waiting period necessary. Or, if during the probationary period any one of your Fleet leaders decides the Armada is not the right environment for your Fleet, they can leave the Armada, once again with no waiting period.

The waiting period for leaving/kicking only applies for Fleets with multiple Fleet leaders. During this waiting period, the Fleet cannot participate in any of the bonuses or Armada contributions. The waiting period can be bypassed if all Fleet leaders agree to the leave or kick action. Alternatively, if any of the Fleet leaders disagrees with the kick or leave vote, they can undo the kick or leave any time before the waiting period is up. Hopefully this will help reduce instances of abuse in case a Fleet leader decides to take action without the consent of the other Fleet leaders.

Management Improvements

Additionally, we’ve added a few new features that should make managing a Fleet a little bit easier. In the Fleet Roster window, the Status Column now has two new options: Join Date and Rank Changed Date. This will make it easier to see how long someone has been in the Fleet, and when they were last promoted or demoted. There is also a new slash command, /ExportGuildMemberList, that can be used to generate an Excel CSV file with all of the current information about the Fleet and its members. We hope that features like these prove useful to Fleet Leaders and Officers alike, especially those that are managing larger Fleets.

Next Featured Episode:

"Broken Circle"
  • The war has gone poorly for the Alliance. The gateway technology of the Iconians allows them to be everywhere at once and to vanish like smoke when threatened.

We had hoped to find some way to defeat the Iconians, some weakness we could exploit. We had hoped that our alliance with the Krenim might produce some advantage. And it might have, if we’d had more time.

But our time just ran out.

And so we have come to our final, most desperate hour. We must put into motion our last resort: an all-out assault on the Iconian forces. Although we stand little chance of success, we have no other options. Our assault will likely fail, but if we do not fight them now, we will certainly fall.
On Thursday, July 16th, take the fight to the Iconians in "Broken Circle," the newest Star Trek Online Featured Episode, featuring the voice talents of Aron Eisenberg as Nog, Robert Duncan McNeill as Tom Paris and Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine. "Broken Circle" features space and ground combat on a massive scale against the greatest threat the galaxy has ever faced.

For a limited time, "Broken Circle" will be playable by all characters level 10 or higher, and will have a new reward each week for the first four weeks that includes the choice of a special tech upgrade or a specialization point. After the first four weeks, it will be available for level 60 players only and will no longer include the choice of a special tech upgrade or specialization point.

Join the Alliance in a desperate battle to save their future.

The Iconians have been a constant threat in Star Trek Online for over five years, and we’ve been in open war with them for nearly 6 months.

The alliance has enjoyed minor victories and suffered major defeats, but they now have a technological advantage they are scrambling to bring into the field. With their backs against the wall and the temporal prime directive in mind, the alliance is poised to make an unthinkable decision. These are dark times filled with tough choices and personal sacrifice, the future can be bright again but it’s always darkest before the dawn.

Star Trek Online is proud to present the finale to the Iconian War: Midnight.

A few weeks ago the Community Manager, LaughingTrendy, posted a Design Your Ship excercise for the users of the forum and social media. Cryptic wants to offer a Starfleet Carrier type starship for the end game. Variants on this theme already exist for the Klingon Defense Force and somewhat for the Federation already. In the form of Flight-Deck Cruisers and Flight-Deck Escorts. Which offer a single hanger deck to launch anything from shuttle pets and Runabouts to fighters or repair drones.

The Klingon Vo'Quv-class Carrier. The first of very few science-based warships offered by the Klingon Defense Force:

Image

The Caitian Atrox-class Carrier. A science-based carrier offered to the Federation to turn the tide of war with the Klingon Empire:

Image

So how to present a truly Starfleet carrier design? Four rounds of polling to narrow down a basic outline for the art side have already concluded. Two more elimination rounds and then the final are unfolding.

Design Your Ship Round 5 [Alpha VS Gamma]

Following the final design will come the Build, the Model and then the Launch of the finalized carrier design to the player's.

Hot Off the Press!

https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star- ... il/9599783
The Star Trek Online development team is incredibly proud of all the stories we’ve been able to tell from launch until now. With the conclusion of the Iconian War episode arc we’ve been able to add a great conclusion to a story that’s been almost 6 years in the making. And as we get ready to begin the next chapter of STO, we want to make sure that all players, new and old, have a chance to experience the current story to its exciting finale. To that end we will be decreasing the minimum level requirements to play the episodes that make up the Iconian War arc as well as many of the episodes that make up the Delta Quadrant arc which directly precede it.

Currently, the episodes that make up the Delta Quadrant arc go from minimum level 50 to minimum level 60 and all the episodes that make up the Iconian War arc are minimum level 60. As part of the Season 11: New Dawn update, coming October 27th, the episodes that make up the Delta Quadrant arc will now have minimum level requirements of 50 to 56 and the episodes of the Iconian War arc will have minimum level requirements of 56 to 59. For more detailed information please consult your mission journal in-game.

Because of the Kobali Prime Adventure Zone’s integration into the Delta Quadrant story, it too has had its episodes’ minimum levels adjusted, from the current range of 54 to 58 to new minimum levels of 52 to 54, which coincide with its place within the Delta Quadrant arc. With this update we were also able to take advantage of a new system that allows us to set the Player’s effective fighting level to a specific value within a given area of a map rather than across that entire map, as it is currently set up. This means that while fighting in the Trenches area of Kobali Prime, players will now have all their powers scaled to an effective fighting level of 52 (53 for the Hillside area and 54 for the Vaadwaur Base area).

We would like to specifically call out that these updates are only for the minimum required level to play these episodes and will not affect rewards (Skill Points, Dilithium, etc.) or any other aspect of these episodes. Additionally, all existing episodes not part of the two arcs mentioned above will remain at their current minimum required level and place in STO’s story.

The end of the Iconian war has given us a unique opportunity to revisit the progression path for the existing episodes. As the game and its story continue to progress, future episodes will be built to fit into this updated progression.

The Iconian War is finally behind us. The finale of the Iconian War, Midnight, showed that the Alliance is bold enough to be principled, and strong enough to truly uphold those principles when their backs are to the wall. Everyone on every side of that conflict is ready to move on from that dark time in the New Dawn of Season 11.

We will be featuring two new story arcs this season, the first of which features Chase Masterson reprising her role as Mirror Leeta. The team has taken the time to completely revamp the Cardassian story arc, and deliver a tight story that delves deeper into the Mirror Universe and their plots against the Prime Universe. Alongside that storyline, we’re also going to take a peek into how the Mirror Universe fared in their version of the Iconian War, and how that fallout could impact the Prime Universe. I’ll give you a hint; it went pretty well for them! They now have the tools and technology to really give the Prime Universe a run for its energy credits through two Deep Space Nine themed queues and a space battlezone in the Badlands. Luckily, the Terran Taskforce Reputation will give you the tools and abilities you’ll need to level the playing field and send the Terran forces back through the looking glass.

We’ll also be moving the main story arc along for Star Trek Online as a whole. With the war over, and a large alliance of varied species, the impulse to discover is re-emerging. We’ll be investigating parts of the Alpha Quadrant that haven’t been seen before, making first contact with a new species, and seeing the far reaching effects of our extensive use of time travel in the Iconian War.

The introduction of the Admiralty System will also give players the opportunity to not only put players in charge of a fleet and truly feel like an admiral, but to also make use of all the ships they have in their inventory. The system provides a strategic and tactical ship command experience, as well as significant rewards for your efforts. We’re excited to see this system finally make it live so the entire community can enjoy something we’ve been having a blast with internally for quite some time.

With the introduction of a brand new story line that brings the game forward, and so much new content to experience, there’s never been a better time to warp in and check out Star Trek Online. I look forward to seeing you all in game for the October 27th release of Season 11: New Dawn.

The heavy, stuffed chair squeaked as Admiral Quinn leaned back. Ever since the rebuilding of Earth Spacedock, his chair had squeaked, and there was never enough engineering time to deal with it. The engineers were always busy doing other things, like keeping the station from coming apart when the inertial dampers went offline.
  • “Linnea, who’s next on my round-robin of political appearances?” asked the graying Trill. “Keep in mind that if you say ‘Empress Sela,’ I will have Security escort you to the airlock with prejudice.”

“Would that be airlock 22, where engineering still hasn’t restored structural integrity, sir?” said Linnea in an all-too-innocent tone.

“That’s the one,” said Quinn with a heavy sigh.

“Fortunately, sir, you don’t have a meeting scheduled for the next two hours. Your calendar, if you chose to look at it, would inform you that this time has been set aside for working on the commencement address for the latest round of Starfleet Academy cadets.”

Quinn’s brow furrowed in puzzlement. “The next graduation is still a few months away,” he said.
Linnea took on a familiar soothing tone, though Quinn couldn’t help but detect the adjutant’s mild humor at the Admiral’s mistake as she said, “This is the accelerated training group – the ones who were being rushed for the front lines in the war, while the war was still on.”
  • “Ah. Of course.” Quinn leaned forward and switched his console to the calendar notes. “How do I tell them that they all cut themselves to the quick with extra work and extra training for a war that’s over? They made huge sacrifices in their time, their stress, and their relationships, all in preparation for making the ultimate sacrifice if necessary. I’m glad it won’t come to that now, but there may be a little adjustment for the ones who lost people in the war, the ones who came from that devastation and wanted to do something about it.”

“They still can,” pointed out the adjutant as she held her PADD close to her chest. “The difference is that you aren’t sending these young people off to die in war. You’re sending them off to something better.”

“Yes, though they might not see it that way,” said Quinn. “These are the ones who spent their all just to be ready to rush to the front lines. Now we have to turn them back into diplomats and scientists.”
Linnea cocked her head and said, “Then that’s their challenge. You know, sir, that every graduating class of cadets faces some kind of challenge. Times change because times are always changing. Captain Spock’s cadet cruise of the Enterprise wound up with several cadets dying due to the attack of Khan. The Intrepid lost an entire Vulcan crew while investigating a giant space amoeba! There’s no shortage of hazards in space.”
  • “It’s not those hazards that I’m worried about, really,” said Quinn. “It’s the hazard of what Starfleet might become. We’ve spent years at war now, and we always train our cadets to prepare them for the hazards we face. We’ve been graduating classes of cadets whose training is all geared for war. We need to teach them to return to the values that we have embraced since before the war, going back to the foundation of Starfleet – the love of exploration, the wonders of space and science, the desire to find joy in diversity of other cultures. We’ve taught so many of these cadets how to fight other cultures, now we have to get them to understand how to work with other cultures. How to respect them and… not fear them.”

“The cadets will emulate their heroes,” said Linnea. “If the Enterprise is out there working on science and diplomacy, the cadets will work their hardest to get a posting there by doing those things. Send their ships to investigate new worlds and meet new civilizations. Look into… whatever is on grid alpha-B1 on your map wall there – that dying star near Ferenginar, or the reports of unknown probes in Tzenkethi space, or that frontier at the edge of here-there-be-space-dragons.”

“You think any of those cadets might have dreams of getting to the admiralty and emulating an old Trill?” said Quinn with a chuckle.

“Only the ones who really enjoy paperwork and squeaky chairs,” Linnea said, then gave a wide smile.

“Out before I call Security,” Quinn retorted. He checked the calendar again. “I need to start recording a test speech, anyhow.”

“Of course, sir. Since you asked me to get out, perhaps I could take some of that vacation time,” said Linnea.

“You know I can’t get anything done when you do that,” said Quinn.

“Precisely,” said the adjutant as she stopped at the open door of the Admiral’s office, “which is why you should practice some of that diplomacy you were just talking about.”
She gave an impish grin, spun on her heel, and returned to her station outside the office, leaving the door to seal with a slight whoosh.
Coming with Season 11, enjoy our latest featured episode, “Sunrise”! On the heels of the Iconian War, return to exploration, science, and the majesty of space as you head to the edge of the known quadrant to investigate the mystery behind a dying star. “Sunrise” introduces our new season and our new story, and includes great rewards that you can earn over the course of several weeks.

See you out there, thataway!

SEASON 11.5 is LIVE.
Star Trek Online wrote:Nearly a year ago, the Alliance began to investigate the possibilities of using time travel as a tool to change the past in order to save the future. With the successful construction and deployment of the Annorax-class Science Dreadnought, the first steps were made into a new future of exploration and conflict mitigation.

Unfortunately, the recent theft of that same ship has potentially planted the seeds of our destruction, and those seeds begin to bear fruit in the episode “Temporal Front”. There will be political intrigue, an enemy plot, and a massive fleet engagement while the past and future of the Alliance hangs in the balance. This Featured Episode will be an escalation point in this budding conflict that you definitely don’t want to miss!

On top of another amazing episode, we have a great collection of features and updates for everyone to enjoy. First and foremost, we have a complete revamp of the Skill System. This revamp will make creating any build you want clearer, simpler, and easier across the board. Everything in the Skill System has been laid out, rethought, continually tested, and iterated on with you on our test shard for nearly two months. I couldn’t be more excited for this change, and I can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it.

In addition to the skill revamp we have the brand new Strategist Secondary Specialization, the Romulan Admiralty Campaign, a new and exciting Na’kuhl-themed Red Alert, and last but certainly not least, the ability to slot ship visuals independent from your starship stats.

All in all, this is one of the largest mid-season updates in the history of Star Trek Online, and I can’t wait to see everyone enjoying it in game.

Star Trek Online is well into its sixth year and showing no signs of stopping. Over our storied history we’ve seen a new faction, two level cap increases, more episodes than any 5 seasons of any Star Trek series, the creation of over 100,000 player generated missions, and celebrity voice work from every era of Star Trek. With all of those accomplishments there is still another frontier yet to explore, the console space.

This fall, Star Trek Online will be launching simultaneously on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles. Our goal is to deliver the same high quality Star Trek experience to players on these consoles, with some additional upgrades to make the transition to the console space a smooth and natural experience.

Our first major task was to convert a PC game that takes nearly an entire keyboard to play into a game that plays well with a 12 button controller. We focused on getting the controls right before we began work in earnest on this project, because we knew the game had to be as tactical, fun, and accessible as the PC game that preceded it. A combination of radial menus and streamlining of some HUD elements created a game that is easily understood, instantly accessible, and incredibly fun to play.

Next up, we invested heavily in our engine and added several modern lighting technologies that significantly improved the visual quality of the game. Deferred lighting, light probes, and improvements to our High Dynamic Range lighting system combine to provide more realistic lighting that feels like a true refresh to the game. These technologies, and the skilled artists that bring them to bear, create an experience that is not only more immersive, but simply put, more beautiful. To the community that has been with us for over half a decade, I want you to know that these lighting improvements will be coming to the PC version of the game later this year as well.

Alongside the lighting system, we decided the entire UI needed not only a complete graphical overhaul but to have its entire back-end rewritten. The goal here was to create a UI that was incredibly streamlined on the back-end to ensure the best game performance possible, while also creating a brand new experience purposely built for the controller. We’re really proud of how this looks and how well it performs, and I’m excited for everyone to see it in action.

In addition to all of these exciting changes, we’ve also made some improvements to episodic flow and player progression that will really improve the experience for everyone.

As a lifelong console player, I couldn’t be more excited to bring Star Trek Online onto the consoles. Keep your hailing frequencies open for regular blogs giving you deeper insight into all of the features I’ve mentioned here and much, much more!

Things that make you say, "Hmmm..."

Jack Emmert, known to MMORPG players chiefly for his role as co-founder of Cryptic Studios, has been appointed CEO of Daybreak’s — yes, that Daybreak — Austin studio, according to a press blast released today.

Formerly one of the minds behind Champions Online and classic City of Heroes, he will now oversee DC Universe Online.

The PR quotes Emmert as saying he’s proud of his work at Cryptic. “As a lifelong comic book fan, I’m thrilled to become part of the DCUO team and eager to engage and play alongside new communities of players. I look forward to being a part of the future of DCUO, as well as guiding our roster of new titles out of Daybreak Austin.”

As of post time, it is unclear when Emmert’s tenure as CEO of Cryptic, a position he’d held since 2011, ended.

Daybreak has updated its own site with a brief Q&A with Emmert.
  • “Naturally, DCUO is near and dear to me. I’ve been a fan of the game since it launched and having an opportunity to be on this team is truly amazing. And Daybreak, to me, is the godfather of the MMORPG industry. Without EverQuest, we never would have seen City of Heroes, World of Warcraft, or any of the other great MMOs that came out. Because of so many seminal games, Daybreak has an unparalleled community of fans who’ve loyally followed the company for years. There’s few places that an MMO developer can go that are so set up for success.”
Not a bleep out of Cryptic. If Emmert is working out of Austin, Texas who is minding Cryptic Studios in the SF Bay area?

How a graphics update and a controls overhaul are bringing Star Trek Online to consoles

This game is enjoying some pretty big changes in its transition to modern consoles.

Star Trek Online may be six and a half years old, but publisher Perfect World seems optimistic about its ability to find and stick to new audiences. With the help of some major graphics updates, this spacefaring MMO will hit both PS4 and Xbox One in Fall 2016. Oh, and the UI and control scheme is getting completely overhauled, too.

Controls were actually the bottleneck that developer Cryptic Studios had to conquer before letting the project start in earnest. They decided last year to try getting the control possibilities of a 72 button keyboard onto a controller, and decided that if they couldn’t make STO work well with a controller, they would abandon the port. According to Cryptic, they found a solution after about five or six weeks, and now here we are: STO is coming to consoles.

And with its transition to modern console hardware came another concern: the original game is not that visually hot anymore. Cryptic’s solution is a complete lighting overhaul. Glowing objects in the game now generate actual light; lighting in general is much more complex and makes better use of the power available in modern consoles. At my E3 press meeting, the Cryptic rep started listing off a litany of lighting techniques now present in the new version of the game. “The core technology team got HDR lightning, light probes, diffuse probes, specular probes…”

So, does the game look better? Yes, actually— it's definitely been improved! Most impressive to me was a before/after slideshow that Cryptic was showing on an iPad in their meeting-room. Now, STO for consoles doesn’t look cutting edge— I played through an episode that looked tolerable, but not anywhere close to as visually detailed or complex as a lot of the newer stuff coming out on consoles today. The new lighting only sometimes does a good job of disguising the fact that the level geometry is still quite old. But the update is pretty dang respectable, particularly when you see some of the screenshots side by side. Unfortunately (fortunately?) console players will not get this comparison opportunity-- but Cryptic should still be proud of themselves.

Since I got my hands on the game, I was also able to test out the actual UI changes coming to STO-for-gamepads. Changing the game’s input method has had big effects all over the gameplay experience— Cryptic actually sped up attack animations and cast speed to make the game feel snappier and more appropriate for the triggers and face buttons console players will use to control the game.

In both ship battle and on-the-ground missions with your character and their bridge officers, abilities can be mapped to face buttons, but holding down a face button also pulls up a wheel of abilities in the same category. You can use the ability wheels to both fire off your abilities and assign them to face buttons on the fly.

ou can now also set specific abilities to automatically trigger based on status effects, cooldowns, and your current in-game state, too. So while piloting your ship around in battle, you can have certain abilities set to trigger whenever the come available. You can also have heal abilities set to trigger when your health falls to a certain value, for instance. Cryptic told me that the goal was for players to be “as involved as they want” in the activation of their powers. Some Cryptic internal players make deep use of these auto-fire settings, but others apparently don’t, preferring to control their own timing. Hopefully, there’s no reason for all players to go hard one way or the other. In general, the ability wheels are pretty easy to use without autocasting— anyone familiar with modern console RPGs like The Witcher 3 should find them familiar.

STO will launch on consoles with the majority of content created over its six-year lifecycle. They “had to cut it off somewhere,” Cryptic told me, but console players will have access to “two expansions and 11 seasons’ worth of updates.”

If Star Trek Online can make the transition to console well, that’s very good news for publisher Perfect World— MMOs are meant to be played for a long, long time, but without substantial updates, technology eventually outpaces even the best of them. If a solid lighting overhaul and a control-scheme update can make this work on console, then this game might keep entertaining players for a lot longer than many people probably thought it would.

To my own surprise, the addition of assets inspired by the Kelvin Timeline into STO has been received well enough. At least if you visit Earth Spacedock to see the number of players who spent money to open the latest Lockbox. Offering signature starship designs from those films as possibilities to loot. Further surprise in that Cryptic is offering a FREE costume to player's which is also inspired by these films. I'm boggled that they aren't for purchase through the Lobi Store - a currency also obtained via the Lockbox.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, and we’ll be celebrating the occasion in a number of ways!

One of those ways involves the arrival of new content inspired by the recently rebooted Star Trek film franchise. There will be new “Kelvin Timeline” starships, consoles, traits, officers, training manuals, gear, and uniforms! Best of all, one of those uniforms will be given to all players for free: the Kelvin Admiral’s Uniform.

From 9 am on 7/21 until 10 am on 7/25, you can find the Kelvin Admiral’s Uniform in the Promotions tab of the C-Store. It will unlock for the account it is claimed on.

Now is a great time for fans of Star Trek, and we hope to see you all in the game. Live long and prosper!
What this does signal is that the Agents of Yesterday expansion isn't all that Cryptic Studios is offering their STO player's in celebration of the 50th. Might that fabled - and highly desired - TOS Constitution-class starship for endgame still be to come in some way?
