'Star Trek: Discovery' Casts Its Spock

The CBS All Access drama will introduce the iconic character, played by Ethan Peck, in its sophomore run.
CBS All Access has cast its Spock.

Ethan Peck has been tapped to take on the iconic role and will play the half-human, half-Vulcan science officer of the USS Enterprise in season two of the subscription video on demand service's Star Trek: Discovery.

"Through 52 years of television and film, a parallel universe and a mirror universe, Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek. The great Leonard Nimoy, then the brilliant Zachary Quinto, brought incomparable humanity to a character forever torn between logic and emotion," showrunner Alex Kurtzman said. "We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock’s greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion and yearning. Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock’s legacy. In that spirit, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family."

Star Trek: Discovery takes place before the original Star Trek series. Clues that Spock would be formally introduced came in the season one finale in which the Discovery encountered the USS Enterprise — otherwise known as the ship that would eventually be captained by James T. Kirk and that counts Spock among its ranks.

In Discovery, Spock is still chief science officer under Captain Christopher Pike (new series regular Anson Mount). The season two trailer (watch it again, below) offers a better update on what Spock is up to in Discovery as the clip reveals the Vulcan is off on his own journey. "He took leave," Pike says in a voiceover. "It’s as if he’d run into a question he couldn’t answer.”

Spock has a larger connection to the USS Discovery: notably his father, Sarek (James Frain) and foster sister, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). With Michael’s theory of her relative being connected to a series of cosmic anomalies, it appears a Star Trek plot could once again revolve around a search for Spock.

Peck, meanwhile, is the grandson of Hollywood icon Gregory Peck. His acting credits include playing Heath Ledger's part in ABC Family's TV take on 10 Things I Hate About You and CW Seed's I Ship It. This past pilot season, he was tapped to star in ABC drama pilot For Love. He's repped by Untitled and Jackoway Tyerman.

Star Trek: Discovery returns in early 2019.

The grandson of Gregory Peck? Color me interested.
The new trailers with Pike *do* look like they're taking a better direction for S2.

Here's hoping.

I still find the whole adopted daughter of Sarek / thus adopted sister to Spock thing to be silly and unnecessary. But what's done is done. I hope he wears the ears well.

Yeah. We discussed this matter in Shout Box. No good will come from this.

Okay, 'Escape Artist' sounds interesting.
Mainly because Mudd has never met Pike.

Regarding the Trek Shorts, word is that they can't be viewed via Netflix. Only CBS All-Access will stream them.

Should prove enlightening should CBS lose this lawsuit. Will mainstream media bother to report on it? SyFy Blaster and other science fiction blogs?

While I don't have All Access, atm, I hear Season Two is off and running. Responses have been mixed. Without the spore drive. I was already aware that it clearly wasn't practical in-universe to continue doing. I just wondered if the series addresses that? I'm going to assume that Captain Christopher Pike looked at what they were doing and said, "Uh, no".

I haven't started S2 yet, but the way S1 ended it seemed pretty clear the spore drive was over. Also consider that the drive was a top secret project, I would be surprised if Pike even knew about it.

How the project was kept secret, I'll never know. But this is ST, fully thinking things through has never been the show's strong point.

Season Two, Episode One is currently free to stream via Youtube. For how long it will be free is anyone's guess.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rvMqRrtmkY

I watched it and would recommend a viewing. It's, IMO, pretty solid. It open with a quick and dirty summary of Season One. Now I have to wrestle with how badly I want to follow the season as it becomes available?

Just saw a teaser for an upcoming episode. When I'm honest, I didn't like who I saw. Then again, Discovery writers are fond of filling holes in the vagueness of any TOS touchstones. Touchstones which only served as history to set up a current moment. In which little explanation was needed at the time TOS was being broadcast. No one writing could predict TOS would explode and new Trek would be written 50 years later by other people.

For example, the only death penalty on Starfleet's record books pertains to visiting planet Talos IV. Until now, it has been accepted that this pertains specifically to Captain Pike's original encounter with the telepathic Talosians (as seen in The Cage and The Menagerie). Per the teaser for If Memory Serves, Discovery will suggest that there is more to this.

phpBB [media]

About these Talosians? What was unique back in 1964, was that Gene Roddenberry purposely cast short women as the three aliens we met. Flowing robes as costuming to disguise their bodies. And vocal dubs were used to make them genderless or at least ambiguous in presentation. These were not Humans. A method later used to perfection by Majel Roddenberry for the scifi series, Earth Final Conflict. The teaser doesn't linger on the new Talosians for very long. But I see tall men in costume. Maybe I'm wrong?

Instead of the prominent blood flow seen in the prosthetic heads of the Talosians, cgi pulses of energy rippling through their large craniums. I note the medallion worn by The Keeper is different. Are there more than one Talosian group surviving on Talos IV?

HOLY $#@*! When did CBS suddenly learn to make STAR TREK???
Apparently, I will again have to consider a compromise. By subbing to All Access. Only because some of Discoveries more severe critics have starting performing a 180 degree turn. Okay, maybe only 90 degrees? The above mentioned episode, which had me rather concerned, is cause for some critics to re-examine the current direction of this Star Trek series.

I was aware that the writing team had a shake up after Season two had started production. Perhaps this episode is the first result of those changes?
