The Anime Recommendation Thread

Post by TashMonster » 04/05/14

Every so often, someone makes a post asking for Anime recommendations, and for a few days, we get a great selection of anime being discussed and bantered about, but then like all posts, it drops off into obscurity, and eventually, the topic comes up again and the cycle repeats.

With that in mind, I've decided to create The Raven-Mythic Anime Recommendation Guide, which will be a compilation of anime recommendations that will be stickied and always available and easy to find.

To that end, I am looking for submissions from anyone who wishes to contribute. If you have an anime that you would like to recommend, please reply to this thread using the following code:

Code

[b]Title: [/b]
[b]Genre: [/b]
[b]Format: [/b]
[b]Content Rating: [/b]
[b]Dub Available: [/b]
[b]Streaming Available: [/b]
[b]Brief Description: [/b]
[b]Recommended Because: [/b]
Title - fairly self-explanatory, but please use the American/English title if there is one (e.g. "Attack on Titan" instead of "Shingeki no Kyojin").

Genre - I know that many Anime can blur the lines between several genres, but since I will be organizing the guide by genre, please choose ONE that BEST fits the show (Action, Sci-fi, Comedy, Romance, Horror, etc). If you have to add a second genre tag, then put it in parentheses so that I can tell which category to put it in.

Format - Series, OVA, or Movie

Content Rating - Try to give the anime a content rating similar to movie ratings here in the US (G, PG, PG-13, R). We're all familiar with that rating system and it should make it easier to tell at a glance whether this is a show for all ages, or something for mature audiences only. Also, a short explanation of why you chose a particular rating would be most helpful. (e.g. R - violence, gore, nudity, French, etc)

Dub Available - Is there an English dub? Can it only be found subtitled? (Note: If the English dub is available but terrible, please say so!)

Streaming Available - Can we watch this show online via Netflix, Crunchyroll, Hulu, or any of the other online streaming sites? Please list which ones you've found it on. If one site is only showing the subbed version and another site has the dub, please note that. Also, if anything is marked "No" and someone finds it streaming somewhere, please let us know.

Brief Description - Please keep this BRIEF, as in, no more than a couple of sentences. Just enough to get a fair idea of what the show is about. Think Netflix-style summaries.

Recommended Because - Why should we watch this anime? What makes it good? Why do you like it? Again though, Brevity is greatly appreciated. No sprawling reviews, please.

NOTE: Please don't post hentai titles. Fanservicey stuff is fine, but let's leave the full-on porn in the Unchained section.

The Raven-Mythic Anime Recommendation Guide

Action

Title: Attack on Titan
Genre: Action
Format: Series
Content Rating: R - Visceral, bloody action and disturbing scenes
Dub Available: Soon
Streaming Available: Netflix, Crunchyroll
Brief Description: Giant humanoid creatures called Titans threaten what's left of the nearly-extinct human race. Three friends join the defense forces to try and stop them.
Recommended by: TashMonster
Recommended Because: Well-developed characters, an exciting and suspenseful plot... I couldn't stop watching it.

Title: Scrapped Princess
Genre: Action (fantasy)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Streaming Available: No
Brief Description: In a medieval world, a teenage girl is on the run because prophecy says she'll destroy the world at age 16. She travels with adopted siblings who keep her safe, while trying to cope with the fact she might become an evil being.
Recommended by: Avarice
Recommended Because: Sweet and funny at times, and global in scope at others, I fell in love with this series immediately. It shows world-changing issues from a personal point of view and lets us think about the nature of devotion, faith, and family while also showing kick-ass action.

Title: Eden of the East
Genre: Action
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Streaming Available: Netflix
Brief Description: An eccentric amnesiac finds he is standing naked outside the White House, with only a gun and a cell phone. Trying to avoid arrest, he sweeps up a nearby tourist into adventure as his mystery unfolds in amazing ways.
Recommended by: Avarice
Recommended Because: This series has 2 movies accompanying it which I haven't seen yet, and I found it completely delightful. Has an 'up' kind of feel, much like a Miyazaki movie, with elements of comedy and romance. Reminded me of 'Romancing the Stone' in its positive adventure vibe.

Title: Kill La Kill
Genre: Action (Comedy)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 - Violence, fanservice
Dub Available: No
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll/Hulu
Brief Description: The creators of Gurren Lagaan made a magical girl show. Ryuko Matoi is a transfer student to a high school where the strong are held aloft over the weak by school uniforms powered by the mysterious "life fibers" that grant whoever wears them superhuman abilities. Ryuko challenges the establishment to try and find the answers behind the murder of her Father.
Recommended by: Brighthawk
Recommended Because: If you like crazy over the top anime Kill La Kill is a treat. It has a really great style to it in the lighting and action direction.

Title: Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero
Genre: Action
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 - Violence
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Crunchroll (Fate/Zero on Netflix)
Brief Description: Shiro Emiya stumbles into a "War" between seven Magi who use epic heroes from throughout history as servants in a battle where victory means the granting of your wishes and losing means death.
Recommended by: Brighthawk
Recommended Because: Neat action sequences, a deep universe of history and magic, and seeing anime versions of mythological figures duke it out. Fate Zero is the prequel and also way more awesome in that the budget was a lot bigger and the animation is way better but watch Fate/Stay Night first. The studio that did Fate/Zero is now redoing Fate/Stay Night though now too so...time to get on the bandwagon!

Title: Last Exile
Genre: Action (Steampunk)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG - Mild violence
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Hulu
Brief Description: Claus and Lavie are obsessed with becoming the first sky couriers to cross the Grand Stream in a vanship. But when they encounter a mysterious girl named Alvis, they are thrust into the middle of an endless battle between two countries.
Recommended by: Tregarde
Recommended Because: Last Exile does so many things right - excellent story, well developed characters, an interesting world you can't help but want to learn more about. It's the kind of show that once it hooks you, you'll want to watch it to the end!

Title: Last Exile: Fam the Silver Wing
Genre: Action (Steampunk)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG - Mild violence
Streaming Available: Hulu
Brief Description: Sequel to the Last Exile
Recommended by: Tregarde
Recommended Because: Sadly, inferior to the original series, but still entertaining.

Title: Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin OVAs
Genre: Action (History)
Format: OVA
Content Rating: PG-13
Streaming Available: http://www.animehere.com/samurai-x-trus ... ova-1.html
Brief Description: Prologue to the well known Rurouni Kenshin series, but a totally different animal.
Recommended by: Olive
Recommended Because: Heavy on the realism with incredibly fluid, well animated combat, no detail spared. Seriously, the fight scenes are truly gorgeous. The english dub in the director's cut is horrendous so look for an un-cut, japanese original with subs. The subs are sometimes a bit squiffy, but way better than the english voice acting!

Title: Vampire Hunter D & Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Genre: Action (Horror)
Format: Movie(s)
Content Rating: R
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: no
Brief Description: 10,000 years from now, the post-apocalyptic earth is littered with mutants & monsters ruled by vampire aristocracy. Doris is bitten by the local Lord and destined to become his wife until she hires a hunter named "D", who is himself half-vampire. In Bloodlust, D is hired to chase down the vampire Meyer Link, who has kidnapped a rich man's daughter. Competing for his prey are famed violent bounty hunters, the Markus Bros.
Recommended by: Avarice
Recommended Because: The first movie is a bit dated, but is a staple of anime. Bloodlust is an absolutely gorgeous Gothic horror and makes an excellent chapter in the life of the enigmatic D and his weird, quirky symbiotic companion, Left Hand. It takes some art cues from the mangas, which were illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano (also does the Final Fantasy logos).

Title: Hellsing Ultimate
Genre: Action (Horror)
Format: OVA
Content Rating: R - heavy violence, strong language, implied rape and sexual situations
Dub Available: yes
Streaming Available: Youtube
Brief Description: When England is threatened by Vampires, warewolves, zombies or anything else that goes bump in the night, it falls to the Hellsing Organization and the tamed vampire Alucard to protect it. When the number of vampire attacks suddenly skyrockets, The Hellsing Organization must find the source before all of England falls to the undead.
Recommended by: Baxter
Recommended Because: great dubbed voice actors, engaging story, very loyal to the manga and last but not least, samurai nuns

Title: Riddle Story of Devil (Akuma no Riddle)
Genre: Action (Yuri?)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 (violence, some mild fanservicey content)
Dub Available: No
Streaming Available: Hulu
Brief Description: Teenage assassin Tokaku is transferred to an all-girls boarding school to compete against eleven other killers in a morbid contest to see who can kill their thirteenth classmate, Haru, first.
Recommended by: TashMonster
Recommended Because: This is an odd show. It's marketed as a yuri romance but it's not like any I've ever seen before. The romance is barely there and throughout most of the show I kept hoping that they'd delve into it a bit, but it remained a tangential thing at best. That said, as strange as the premise is, the story is surprisingly engaging. All of the characters are fleshed out and interesting. There are even some spots where I found myself feeling sympathetic towards the girls who were trying to kill Haru. Every episode starts with a riddle for Tokaku and the audience to figure out, and the ending song is tailored to the assassin-of-the-week and sung by that character's voice actor. It was a really nice touch.

Title: Black Lagoon
Genre: Action
Format: Series
Content Rating: R
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: http://www.funimation.com/shows/black-lagoon
Brief Description: Modern day pirates in an asian outlaw town kick ass and take names.
Recommended by: Beretta
Recommended Because: If gun-fu and mercenaries are your thing, there are few better places to find those than in this show. It's gloriously OTT. That said, it can be dark in a way that it's content rating doesn't quite cover all by itself.

Title: Jormungand
Genre: Action
Format: Series
Content Rating: R
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: http://www.funimation.com/shows/jormungand/home
Brief Description: A child soldier travels the world with eccentric arms-dealer Koko Hekmatyar and her team of elite bodyguards.
Recommended by: Beretta
Recommended Because: If the above description appeals to you, rest assured that the show doesn't hold back with it's premise or pretend to have easy answers. Koko can be crazy-awesome and absolutely terrifying and sometimes both at once.

Title: Cowboy Bebop
Genre: Action / Sci-Fi
Format: Series and a Movie
Content Rating: PG-13
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: http://www.funimation.com/shows/cowboy-bebop/home
Brief Description: Bounty hunters Spike Spiegal and Jet Black travel space with femme fatale Faye Valentine, oddball hacker Ed and genius corgi Ein.
Recommended by: Beretta
Recommended Because: The show brags in one of it's eyecatches that it "becomes a new genre itself" and it's hard to argue with that claim. It's a space western, a noir, a heroic bloodshed story and several other things at the same time. And it does all of those things well.

Title: Samurai Champloo
Genre: Action
Format: Series
Content Rating: R
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: http://www.funimation.com/shows/samurai-champloo/home
Brief Description: Hip hop ronin samurai travel with a young waitress in a playfully anachronistic Feudal Japan in search of the mysterious Sunflower Samurai.
Recommended by: Beretta
Recommended Because: It's a show that gives historical accuracy the middle finger in the name of doing cool stuff. This is a quirky and irreverent show that can still tell a strong story at the same time.

Comedy

Title: Tonari No Seki-Kun (Seki the Master of Killing Time)
Genre: Comedy (Slice-of-life)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: Rumi Yokoi is a high school student, the boy who sits at the desk next to her never pays attention in class. Each short episode follows Rumi as she watches Seki find creative and increasingly ridiculous ways to goof off in class.
Recommended by: Brighthawk
Recommended Because: Really you just have to watch the first episode to see if you'll like the show. Each episode is like 7-10 minutes so it's a nice short palette cleanser if you just want to watch something funny between more serious faire.

Title: Ghost Stories
Genre: Comedy (Horror)
Format: Series
Content Rating: R - Strong language and sexual jokes
Dub Available: yes
Streaming Available: http://www.cartoon-world.tv/watch/ghost-stories/
Brief Description: Satsuki Miyanoshita and her younger brother Keichiro moved from Tokyo to their mother's hometown who died after a long illness. Not long after they moved in, they discovered that the old abandoned school building near their new school is haunted by demons and evil spirits. At first, they don't seem want to get involved with it, not until their family cat, Kaya, is taken by a demon. In order to save the town, Satsuki and her younger brother Keichiro along with their new friends, Momoko, Reo and Hajime forms a team to fight those demons.
Recommended by: Baxter
Recommended Because: It's hilarious. In japan, Ghost Stories was a horror series aimed ad pre-teens and teens along the same line as the 90's Nickelodeon show "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" When it got dubbed however, they didn't have the money for a translator and so the VAs were told to wing it. And boy did they. this is basically the only professionally produced Abridged series. Be prepared to laugh and be offended, not scared.[/quote]

Title: Princess Jellyfish
Genre: Comedy (Slice of Life)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Netflix, Hulu
Brief Description: Tsukimi is a timid young NEET living in a women's only apartment with several other eccentric, social misfits. The arrival of a "Stylish" in her life is about to shake things up!
Recommended By: Tregarde
Recommended Because: Princess Jellyfish is, without a doubt, one of the funniest animes ever made. Much of the humor is based on the "clash of cultures" trope, so it helps if you're at least passingly familiar with Japanese sub-cultires (particularly otaku and stylish). Too short at only 11 episodes, but well worth the time.

Title: Gintama
Genre: Comedy, action, sci-fi
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13
Dub Available: None that I've found
Streaming Available: Yep, it's over at Crunchyroll
Brief Description: What if Feudal Japan had been invaded by aliens who quickly banned the use of swords? A lot of out of work samurai, obviously. Gintoki is just one of those, and with a former waiter and wannabe samurai and a violent little girl with a giant alien dog pet/mount/thing, sets up a business called Odd Job Gin where they'll take any job offered. Any job.
Recommended By: Diera
Recommended Because: It's hilarious, and also a bit heartbreaking in places. The amount of fourth-wall smashing is the best. I haven't been much into anime in at least a decade, but this one pulled me in immediately.

Drama

Title: Genji Monogatari
Genre: Drama (Classic)
Format: Series
Content Rating: R
Streaming Available: Youtube (Motoss has the full thing uploaded)
Brief Description: Anime from the 1980s retelling the classic tale of Shining Prince Genji.
Recommended by: Olive
Recommended Because: The animation is beautifully done, the story has been stripped of some of the tedium and simplified so non-japanese audiences can enjoy it. It's a tale for people who like the drama genre and aren't looking for high action. There's a new version of this titled Genji Monogatari Sennenki that I hear is good, but lacks some of the ambience of the original.

Title: When They Cry
Genre: Drama (Horror)
Format: Series
Content Rating: R - Extremely graphic and gory violence, implied child abuse, torture, and suicide
Dub Available: yes
Streaming Available: http://www.cartoon-world.tv/watch/when-they-cry/
Brief Description: When a reclusive shut in moves to a small village just in time fro their temple festival, he finally opens up and makes friends. But slowly they begin to kill each other. And the strange part is, no matter what the shrine maiden Rika does to stop it, it keeps happening over and over.
Recommended by: Baxter
Recommended Because: Despite the gore, horribly graphic scenes of murder and completely misleading first episode, which sets up the series as a slice of life comedy, this anime blends together 80's style old school slasher films, psychological horror, government conspiracies, and the supernatural into something that despite it shock value, is actually engaging.

Fantasy

Title: Haibane Renmei
Genre: Fantasy (Slice-of-Life)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Streaming Available: Hulu
Brief Description: A girl falls from the sky and awakens with no memory, to find she isn't alone. In this walled town steeped with strange tradition, children known as Haibane have little grey wings. This story reflects their lives and the mystery of their being.
Recommended by: Avarice
Recommended Because: This is the happy place I go to feel better. Soft and touching, I really loved getting to know each character in this strange little place & frequently rewatch the series. Originally watched because it was created by the Serial Experiments Lain crew.

Title: Mushi-shi
Genre: Fantasy (adventure?)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Streaming Available: Hulu, Netflix
Brief Description: Ginko, A wandering spiritualist known as a Mushi master, encounters strange curiosities and aids people whenever the world of Mushi intrudes into the world of humans. He cannot remain in one place for too long, because his presence attracts and concentrates Mushi.
Recommended by: Avarice
Recommended Because: Hulu recommended this to me based on Haibane Renmei, and I watched it on nights I couldn't go immediately to sleep. The series is somehow calming and intriguing simultaneously, and reminds me a little of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Each show is its own little adventure and can be watched singularly, but the series has a nice arcing story as well. I found value in the Japanese culture it portrays as well as the cleverness of each mystery, and it always made me feel introspective & good.

Title: Spirited Away
Genre: Fantasy
Format: Movie (Studio Ghibli)
Content Rating: G
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: No
Brief Description: After a detour on their way to a new house, belligerent little Chihiro wanders into the spirit world, where she must brave adventures and guile to save her parents.
Recommended by: Avarice
Recommended Because: This movie is another happy place when things get rough. It's wonderful and beautiful, and like most Miyazaki films, is a credit to the power of love.

Title: Princess Mononoke
Genre: Fantasy (drama)
Format: Movie (Studio Ghibli)
Content Rating: PG-13 - some graphic violence & severed limbs
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: no
Brief Description: In ancient Japan, the battle between Gods and Humans reaches a new, violent peak just as a young man arrives from a far-off village to try and mitigate the situation with eyes unclouded by hate.
Recommended by: Avarice
Recommended Because: This, being the first Miyazaki movie I'd seen, had a profound effect on me. It's nuanced and gorgeously animated, and tries to show that battles are usually much more than good vs evil.

Title: El Hazard - The Magnificent World
Genre: Fantasy (sci-fi)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Unknown
Brief Description: The story focuses on four people from Earth. Three high school students Makoto Mizuhara, Katsuhiko Jinnai and Nanami Jinnai, and the History teacher Masamichi Fujisawa are mysteriously transported to the fantastical world of El-Hazard. El-Hazard is threatened by a possible war between the human nations and the insectoid Bugrom tribe.
The central conflict in El-Hazard: The Magnificent World focuses on Makoto, who along with Nanami, Mr. Fujisawa and human residents of El-Hazard fight against Jinnai's conquest, but other, more sinister machinations lie below the surface.
Recommended by: Lyah
Recommended Because: El Hazard really is a wonderful anime. Great voice acting in both English and Japanese, good animation, good story, a coherent narrative, humor, adventure, and some romance. El Hazard also has had a very strong influence on my development of Thelus as a game world. I STRONGLY advise anyone to skip "The Wanderers", a spin-off series which is a G-rated retelling of the series, dumbed down, and turned really really stupid. El-Hazard: The Magnificent World 2, and El-Hazard: The Alternative World, while not quite as awesome as the original, are worthy sequels. This is not the best, darkest, grittiest, sexiest, or even best animated anime out there. But what it is is a wonderful world, lush with characters and concepts, rich in humor and adventure, and short enough that you won't have to devote your life to figuring it out.

Title: Kino's Journey
Genre: Fantasy (Sci-Fi)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: http://www.animehere.com/anime/kino-no- ... world.html
Brief Description: A young traveler and her talking motorcycle have existential adventures.
Recommended By: Beretta
Recommended Because: This is a soothing and contemplative show without being pretentious or incomprehensible.

Title: Cross Ange
Genre: Action (fantasy, mecha)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13, borderline R at times
Dub Available:
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll, Hulu
Brief Description: In a world of peace and prosperity, where everyone can use a magic called "mana", a rare few are born who can not manipulate mana, even cancel it out. These few are called "norma" and are considered dangerous to society. On her 16th birthday, princess Angelise is revealed to be a norma. So complete was the deception even Angelise herself did not know. Exiled, she has lost everything, even her name, and discovers that norma are used to pilot mechas called 'para-mails' to fight dragons.
Recommended by: Tregarde
Recommended Because: Cross Ange is an excellent story that would have benefited from better writing. Ange(lise) is a complex character who develops and changes as the story progresses. There is also quite a bit of fanservice, but not at the expense of the story. Warning, the first episode ends on an unnecessarily brutal note (a low not seen again, thankfully).

Horror

Title: Black Butler
Genre: Horror (Supernatural)
Format: Series
Content Rating: R - Graphic blood and violence
Streaming Available: Netflix, Hulu
Brief Description: Ceil Phantomhive was born into a life of luxury in Victorian London, only to have his parents murdered before his eyes. Wrought with grief, he makes a pact with the demonic servant Sebastian, to help him track down, and punish, the fiends who made him an orphan.
Recommended by: Tregarde
Recommended Because: Black Butler is an odd mixed bag. The supernatural/horror parts can be very mature and even gruesome. The comedy parts can be ridiculous. While it does give the show an uneven tone, there is some very interesting stuff going on.

Title: Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales
Genre: Horror
Format: Series
Content Rating: R
Streaming Available: Youtube
Brief Description: A short collection of three classic kabuki plays made into anime, designed and directed by some of the premier names in the anime industry.
Recommended by: Olive
Recommended Because: Each story is stunningly beautiful, with a more realistic and true-to-life setting than you usually see in anime. Each story handles some extremely dark themes (murder, slavery, rape). I think the first tale is actually the weakest in terms of plot, they get successively better. The japanese voice acting is way superior so try find a subbed rather than the dubbed version!

Title: Mononoke
Genre: Horror
Format: Series
Content Rating: R
Streaming Available: Youtube, Vimeo
Brief Description: A spin-off from the third Ayakashi horror tale, Bake Neko. It follows the (possibly demonic) medicine seller on his journey as he deals with and dispatches mononoke he finds along the way.
Recommended by: Olive
Recommended Because: Good for people who like short and sweet and aren't fond of arc that last 100 episodes. Each episode is self contained, but watching Bake Neko first will help understand the rhythms of the plot. Each episode has three arcs and usually takes the form of a murder-mystery-thriller type.

Magical Girl

Title: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Genre: Magical Girl (action)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 (it's a bit violent for the genre)
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Netflix (Dub and Sub), Crunchyroll (Sub only)
Brief Description: Witches are causing havoc in the world and only young girls recruited to be magical girls can seem to stop them, but what if the mysterious entity recruiting these girls didn't tell them where those witches came from or the full nature of the contracts they have made.
Recommended by: Toryll & Tregarde
Recommended Because: Puella Magi Madoka Magica is rightly considered by many to be one of the best anime series ever. It takes a serious approach to just what it would mean to be a 'magic girl' and what effect having all this power, and being constantly put in life threatening situations (and not always winning), would have on their young lives. It also explores why there would be magic girls in the first place.

The series was condensed slightly into two movies, with some new dialoge and animations mixed in. Whether the series or movies are better is largely a matter of opinion. The third movie, "Rebellion" is a direct sequel and well worth viewing (and also a major mind fuck. Expect to be very confused at the start of Rebellion, but it will all make sense later!)

Title: Witch Craft Works
Genre: Magic Girl (comedy)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available:
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: Honoka Takamiya is a regular student whose only problem seems to be that he sits next to Ayaka Kagari, the school's "Princess". They have never spoken to each other. But one day, he finds himself saved from an attacker by a witch who happens to be Kagari. Honoka then finds himself dragged into a conflict between two powerful groups of witches.
Recommended by: Tregarde
Recommended Because: Witch Craft Works is a pretty funny and entertaining show, with fun cast of quirky characters. It has a strong beginning and ending, but the middle could have used a few more episodes to flesh out the world and characters. Also, the ending credits are as adorable as they are macabre (seriously, just watch what's going on!)

Romance

Title: Ef: a tale of memories
Genre: Romance (slice of life)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: No
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: Girl meets boy, but the girl has a condition due to an accident where she can only remember the past 18 hours of her life. Unless she writes down the days events in a diary for her to review the next day, she forgets what has happened.
Recommended by: Toryll
Recommended Because: In some ways this is like an anime version of "50 First Dates" but with less of the comedy. It's a very complex and entertaining story, though.

Title: Clannad
Genre: Romance (Slice-of-Life)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Amazon Prime (Sub only), Hulu (Sub only)
Brief Description: Bitterly disillusioned high school senior Tomoya Okazaki was recruited by Hikarisaka High as a potential basketball star, but he injured his shoulder in a fight and can no longer play. As a self-described delinquent and slacker, he shows up late, plays hooky with his friend Sunohara, and sleeps in class--unthinkable misconduct in the formal Japanese school system. But he's really a very nice guy, as he reveals when he strikes up a conversation with Nagisa Furukawa.
Recommended by: TashMonster
Recommended Because: This is one of my all-time favourites. It was one of the first 'romantic' animes that I saw and has become the standard by which I judge all others. The characters are so well-written that you can't help but become attached to them, and the story itself is heartwarming (and at times heart-breaking). There is also a sequel series called "After-Story" which picks up right where this series ends and is considered by many to be even better.

Title: Katawa Shoujo
Genre: Romance
Format: Visual Novel
Content Rating: PG-13/R (Each route through the game contains 1-3 fairly explicit sex scenes, but they can be turned off in the options menu.)
Dub Available: N/A, but the game was written in English
Streaming Available: It's freeware, downloadable at http://www.katawa-shoujo.com/download.php (Note: Use the direct download link. It's not terribly large.)
Brief Description: (From the website): Katawa Shoujo is a bishoujo-style visual novel set in the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled children, located somewhere in modern Japan. Hisao Nakai, a normal boy living a normal life, has his life turned upside down when a congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization. Despite his difficulties, Hisao is able to find friends — and perhaps love, if he plays his cards right.
Recommended By: Kirath
Recommended Because: A random image linked in the shoutbox sparked my curiosity and I tracked this down and downloaded it. It wound up blowing me away. It's not perfect, but it's beautifully written and more than once I found myself literally in tears while reading. It turns out the game has quite a following on the net, and even has it's own tvtropes page, the intro of which does a better job than I can of describing what is so great about it: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/V ... tawaShoujo

Romantic Comedy

Title: Ouran High School Host Club
Genre: Romantic Comedy (Slice-of-Life)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Netflix (Dub)
Brief Description: A new student at Ouran High School accidentally stumbles onto the Host Club, an all-male group that makes money by entertaining the girls at the prestigious school
Recommended by: TashMonster
Recommended Because: This is a great show. It's light-hearted and funny, with an entertaining cast and a cheerful tone. However, despite its outwardly silly appearance that seems to be mocking its own genre, the story is surprisingly well-written and every now and then, in between the laughs, the writers sneak in some particularly deep plots and real character development.

Title: Sakura Trick
Genre: Romantic Comedy (Yuri)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: No
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: Haruka and Yuu are entering their first year at a high school that is scheduled to be closed in three years. Knowing that theirs is the last class that will ever be in the school, they decide to make their first year memorable by sharing a kiss.
Recommended by: TashMonster
Recommended Because: The best thing about Sakura Trick is the focus on the romance between the girls. Although there is a fair bit of fanservice, the show doesn't dwell on it like in other animes of this genre. Instead it places more emphasis on the relationship between the two main characters (and their friends) as they try to figure out their feelings for each other. It's charming, sweet, and simple, but it's well done and has an innocence about it that's noticeably absent from most yuri anime.

Title: Toradora
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: No
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll (Requires Premium Membership after episode 6), Hulu
Brief Description: Ryuji Takasu has learned the hard way that appearances can be deceiving. Despite his inwardly kind personality, his unintentionally sharp gaze and aggressive features cause everyone to believe that he is a delinquent thug. However, on the first day of the new school year, he unwittingly crosses the most feared girl in school, Taiga Aisaka, becoming her arch enemy. What's worse is that she lives next door to Ryuji and happens to be friends with the girl he secretly has a crush on.
Recommended by: TashMonster
Recommended Because: Another one of my favourites. The characters are deep and interesting. They grow and develop naturally over the course of the series. The writing is superb and the interactions are great. The show is light-hearted when it needs to be, but doesn't shy away from throwing in a sucker punch or two when necessary. I'd call this a must-see for anyone who enjoys romantic comedies.

Title: Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san
Genre: Romantic Comedy (Yuri)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG (nothing really objectionable except some minor innuendo)
Dub Available: No
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: Yachiyo Inugami is a dog-like girl who loves cats, and Suzu Nekoyama is a cat-like girl who loves dogs. The series follows them and their other animal-themed classmates around and showcases their peculiar relationships.
Recommended by: TashMonster
Recommended Because: This show is a classic slice-of-life high school romantic-comedy reduced down to a series of three-minute vignettes. There is not much character development to speak of. The jokes are fast-paced and easy to miss. It lacks a lot of the depth that other rom-coms might sneak in. That said, it is at the very least utterly adorable and doesn't involve any serious time commitment to enjoy. It's so sweet and cute that it's almost impossible to come away from watching an episode without smiling a bit.
*Note* It helps some to know what each character's name means as that gives a hint as to what animal they're representing.

Title: Tenchi Muyo collection :
Tenchi Muyo! OVA Series
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki
Tenchi Muyo! Tenchi Universe
Tenchi Muyo! Tenchi in Tokyo
Genre: Comedy/action/"harem"
Format: Series, OVA, and movies
Content Rating: PG13-R ( Occasional "barbie doll" quality nudity, risque humor )
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: It seems most, if not all, of the series is available to stream on Funimation's website: http://www.funimation.com/
Brief Description: An average nice guy's life is turned upside-down as the arrival of several girls at his home brings everything from romantic rivalry to interstellar wars to his doorstep. Often considered the definitive "harem anime" series - one lead male character surrounded by many female leads, several if not all of which compete for his affection. This series, as in most harem animes, leaves the male lead overwhelmed by the whole ordeal and desperately trying to keep the peace while trying not maintain friendships with everyone.

The OVA series is the original, with Ryo-Ohki being a continuation/completion of the series which had been unfinished for over a decade.
Tenchi Universe is a retelling of the story in a TV series, with several plot alterations, but the basic theme and character personalities remain the same
Tenchi in Tokyo is only included for completion. This spinoff series seems, at least at first, to be targetting a younger audience. Several significant plot alterations, supposedly picking up when the girls had been with Tenchi for some time already. It does seem to take a more series turn later in the series, but I never really got through it.

There are also 3 movies that don't technically fit into the timelines of the series, as seems to be the norm with movies from anime series:
Tenchi Muyo in Love
Tenchi Forever ( aka Tenchi Muyo in Love 2 )
Tenchi Muyo Daughter of Darkness

I'd highly recommend Tenchi Forever above the other 2. Seems to bring nice closure to the Tenchi Universe series, whether it's officially cannon or not.

Recommended by: Calris
Recommended Because: Quite simply, it's one of the "classic staple" anime series IMO. Very entertaining, over the top, and funny. And Ryoko is pure awesomeness.

Sci-Fi

Title: Sword Art Online
Genre: Sci-fi
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Netflix (Dub/Sub), Crunchyroll (Sub)
Brief Description: In the year 2022, VR technology has allowed a virtual world to be created that enables users to completely immerse themselves in the game. However, upon logging into the world for the first time on launch day, the players soon find that they can't log out.
Recommended by: TashMonster
Recommended Because: An interesting plot and well-written characters. Plus, as a gamer, it's always kind of fun to wonder just what it would be like if something like this actually happened...
Personal note - the first story arc ends after episode 14, and the second arc that begins on episode 15 is not nearly as good.

Title: Serial Experiments Lain
Genre: Sci-Fi (Psychological)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Streaming Available: Hulu
Brief Description: Everyone in class gets creepy email from a dead girl except for shy little Lain, so she becomes curious about the growing technology of the Wired (Internet) where anyone can become an entirely different person.
Recommended by: Avarice
Recommended Because: I watched this before the Matrix and it was awesome. Has a really kick-ass soundtrack. Explores the power of another world inside the Wired, how that power affects the "real" world, and reality itself. Everyone is always connected.

Title: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Genre: Sci-fi (Drama)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 - Violence
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: No
Brief Description: While Earth struggles to repel each powerful Angel that appears, the teenage pilots of the defending Evangelions also have to balance daily life, knowing they could die at any battle.
Recommended by: Avarice
Recommended Because: After glimpsing one of the show's endings at a convention, I had to watch the whole thing and it kinda swallowed life for a while. Similar to Attack on Titan, this is suspenseful and climactic. Yes, you'll probably want to kill the main character for whining in the start, but it's worth it. There's 2 movies that accompany the series, and one of them rewrites the ending. I'm still looking for that one.

Title: Steins;Gate
Genre: Sci-fi (thriller)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG (Some slightly disturbing scenes, but very brief.)
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Funimation website
Brief Description: Imagine if you could send a text message to the past, what impact could it have on the present? Aspiring young mad scientist Okabe Rintaro (aka Hououin Kyouma) stumbles upon the secrets of time travel completely by accident, and things spiral rapidly out of control the more he tries to change fate itself.
Recommended by: Toryll
Recommended Because: It's a very fun series, a fair number of light-hearted moments but also gets very psychological. Things all come together by the end with some major mind blowing moments. One of my personal favorites.

Title: Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
Genre: Sci-Fi
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 - Mild violence
Dub Available: No
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: Ensign Ledo is a Machine Caliber pilot in the Galactic Alliance of Humankind, fighting a seemingly endless war against the Hideauze out in the far reaches of the galaxy. But after an accident he finds himself stranded on a world covered in water. Due to language and cultural barriers, Ledo lives as a lonely foreigner while trying to find a way home.
Recommended by: Tregarde
Recommended Because: By the same writer as Puella Magica, Gargantia likewise displays the same excellent writing and deconstructing of a tired genre. The 'fish out of water' (no pun intended) side is handled very well, with Ledo really feeling like he's come from a very different culture.

Title: Robotech
See Also: Super Dimensional Fortress 1 Macross, Macross Plus, Macross 7, Macross Zero, Macross Frontier
Genre: Sci-fi (Mecha)
Format: Series and OVA
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Yes
Brief Description: In the series, Robotechnology refers to the scientific advances discovered in an alien starship that crashed on a South Pacific island. With this technology, Earth developed robotic technologies, such as transformable mecha, to fight three successive extraterrestrial invasions
Recommended by: Lyah and Tregarde
Recommended Because: Lyah - The granddaddy of the American anime explosion, back when it was called "Japanimation". Robotech is, for a lot of people my age, the very first real anime we ever saw. Also because, for many of us, this was the first time anyone on a cartoon ever died! Simplistic by today's standards, Robotech is still a fun romp!
Tregarde - In an era where the machines were the stars of the show, SDF-1 Macross put an emphasis on the people and spawned a beloved legacy. As a whole, the series is known for having strong characters and stories, and some incredible action scenes. Music also plays an important part, on both small and large scales. The original series was edited, stripping out some of the maturity and complexity, to form the first chapter of Robotech.

Title: Starblazers
Genre: Sci-Fi
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Streaming Available: Yes
Brief Description: Star Blazers consists of three television seasons. Each is an English-language adaption of its Japanese Space Battleship Yamato counterpart. In the first season, Earth is attacked by Gamilon, a distant planet. The radiation from Gamilon's planet bombs forces everyone on Earth underground. With no way to remove the radiation, all life on Earth will be wiped out in one year. The Earth then receives unexpected help from Queen Starsha of the planet Iscandar, who offers a device called "Cosmo DNA" which will remove the radiation. However, since Iscandar is 148,000 light years away, Starsha also sends plans for the experimental Wave Motion Engine that, when constructed, will aid whoever can travel to Iscandar. On Earth, a crew is recruited, headed by Captain Avatar, and an old sunken battleship (the Yamato) is transformed into a spaceship (the Argo), outfitted with the Wave Motion Engine, and sent to Iscandar.
Recommended by: Lyah
Recommended Because: Another granddaddy of the American "Japanimation" explosion. Sadly, Starblazers REALLY does not stand the test of time, and if you haven't grown up with it, you probably won't be all that engaged. Still... it's worth looking at if for no other reason that history. Rebooted several times, and made into a live action film.

Title: The Unlimited Hyobu Kyosuke
Genre: Sci-fi (supernatural)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: No
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: A spinoff series of Zettai Karen Children (known as Psychic Squad in the US) focusing on Hyobu Kyosuke, a rogue esper and leader of a pro-esper criminal organization PANDRA.
Recommended by: Toryll
Recommended Because: One of those rare instances where the spinoff is better than the original. And of course Kyosuke reminds me a lot of Magneto from the X-Men.

Title: Valvrave The Liberator
Genre: Science Fiction (Mecha)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 (violence, mature themes)
Dub Available:
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: Sometime in the future, humanity has built a Dyson Sphere around an artificial sun and much of the population has emigrated there. Humanity has divided into three major super powers. One day the Dorssian military invades the peaceful JIOR. With almost all of the adults evacuated, the high school students on Module 77 find themselves defending their home with extremely powerful robots - the Valvraves.
Recommended By: Tregarde
Recommended Because: While the initial set up seems like it was lifted from a Gundam series, Valvrave gradually distinguishes itself. Strong writing and well developed characters keep things moving. And as the series gets crazier with each revelation, it also gets better (particularly in the second season). One thing that also distinguishes this show is that it never forgets the majority of the cast are teenagers, and they act like teenagers! This is especially highlighted when they have to deal with adults on an adult level.

Title: Knights of Sidonia
Genre: Science Fiction
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Netflix
Brief Description: In 2371, the alien Gauna attack and destroy Earth. The survivors create "seed ships" from the remains of the planet and spread out in hopes of finding new homes for humanity. A thousand years later, the Sidonia is perhaps the last seed ship, and is protected from the Guana by the mecha called Gardes.
Recommended By: Tregarde
Recommended Because: Knights of Sidonia has been compared to Battlestar Galactica (2004). While not as depressing as BSG, it does take a more "hard" sci-fi approach than most anime - there are no faster than light drives or communication, fuel is a concern on long range missions, etc. Life on Sidonia has some interesting twists. The characters are generally well done, as is the animation. Combat, when it occurs, is brutal and there are always casualties. A second season has been ordered.

Title: Outlaw Star
Genre: Sci-Fi (Action)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: http://www.cartoon-world.tv/watch/outlaw-star/
Brief Description: Young bounty hunter Gene Starwind and child mechanic Jim Hawking inherit an experimental starship. Together with bio-android Melfina, catgirl Aisha ClanClan and assassin Twilight Suzuka, they search for the Galactic Layline said to be a source of great knowledge, wealth and power.
Recommended By: Beretta
Recommended Because: This is a space fantasy that gets the balance between sci-fi and fantasy more or less spot-on.

Title: Aldnoah.Zero
Genre: Science Fiction (action, mecha)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13
Dub Available:
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll, Hulu
Brief Description: In 1972 an alien hypergate leading to Mars was discovered on the moon. Later, settlers on Mars founded the Vers Empire and declared war. In 1999 the lunar hypergate exploded and an uneasy ceasefire settled. 15 years later, the granddaughter of the Vers emperor travels to Earth on a peace mission, but her assassination sparks the war anew.
Recommended By: Tregarde
Recommended Because: The top staff have worked on some of the most highly regarded anime, and the quality shows here too. Aldnoah.Zero takes a very serious approach to the brutality of war, including the political maneuvering that happens. Plus it's fun to watch how the Earth forces try to overcome the vastly superior Vers technologies.

Title: Bodacious Space Pirates
Genre: Science Fiction (adventure, comedy)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available:
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll, Hulu
Brief Description: Kato Marika is a normal high school student living an ordinary life, till the day she learns the father she has never met was a notorious space pirate, and that upon his death she inherited his ship, the Bentenmaru.
Recommended By: Tregarde
Recommended Because: Bodacious Space Pirates is a light-hearted adventure. It's amusing to watch Marika as she tries balance finishing school while learning to be a pirate captain, and dealing with the paperwork (who knew being a pirate involved paperwork?!). If there is one weakness it's that not enough time is spent with the Bentemaru's crew, leaving them underdeveloped.

Supernatural

Title: Natsume Yuujinchou
Genre: supernatural (slice-of-life)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: No
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: A young boy, Takashi Natsume, has the ability to see spirits that have haunted him since his childhood. Upon the death of his grandmother Reiko, he inherits a book containing name of various spirits that his grandmother has collected. Many spirits wish to possess this book as it can give them power over the other spirits, while others simply wish to have their names returned to them. Through the series he comes to understand his abilities better, and his relationship to the spirits in the world.
Recommended by: Toryll & Erithe
Recommended Because: It has both light-hearted and serious moments, but overall very casual feeling. It also has some nice emotionally touching moments.

Title: Baccano!
Genre: Supernatural (Action)
Format: Series
Content Rating: R
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: http://www.funimation.com/shows/baccano/home
Brief Description: 30's gangsters cross paths with alchemists bootlegging an immortality elixir in a non-linear story where everyone is a lead.
Recommended By: Beretta
Recommended Because: It handles it's eternal life premise with intelligence and gives the audience room to reach their own conclusions.

Thriller

Title: Perfect Blue
Genre: Thriller (Psychological)
Format: Movie
Content Rating: R - violence, assault triggers, adult themes
Streaming Available: No
Brief Description: Highly competitive for fame, it seems difficult for budding pop idols to hold onto their popularity & innocence both. But a displeased stalker begins murdering people around Mima as she tries to branch into an acting career. The closer they get, the more Mima starts to struggle with who she's becoming and what she's willing to do for work.
Recommended by: Avarice
Recommended Because: This is an awesome mind-trip movie, but it can be kind of disturbing and has some abuse triggers.

It seems Japan is catching on as more shows are getting a western simulcast. As usual, several very interesting looking new shows. It seems the "short form" format is becoming more popular also, as I see it mentioned more often.

After having watched the series, I finally caught the Madoka Magicka Rebellion movie. Holy crap, I didn't see that ending coming. But, at the same time, I don't think I should be surprised... Seemed kinda a Jedi take on what love could drive someone to.

Watched 'Attack on Titan' - Tash, you were spot on for the description and feel. I really loved it until the last episode.

I dunno - it didn't feel like a finale setting up season two so much of a "hey, we just ran out of money, so let's see if the masses will Kickstarter for us to continue". Made the mistake of Googling for a release date on Season 2 and I am getting that "It'll be out right after the sequel to 5th Element" feel....

Kotaku's Spring 2016 Anime Guide...
As usual, a mix of new shows and sequels, covering a wide range of genres. One show puts new meaning to "short form" by having 30 second episodes! There's Attack on Titan, with zombies, on a train! And the latest Macross looks like it's gone completely bonkers!

Title: Your Lie In April

Genre: Romance

Brief Description: A gifted young pianist has been unable to hear his own music since the death of his mother, leaving him traumatized and unable to play. Until he meets an energetic violinist who turns his life upside down and drags him back on stage. But sometimes, life can be harsh and cruel...

Recommended Because: It's a heart warming ( and heart breaking ) journey through a young man learning to live again. Just be sure to have lots of tissue ready.

Title: Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon
Genre: Fantasy/Science Fiction
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 (violence, fanservice)
Dub Available:
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll, Anime Planet
Brief Description: Set in a world where magic-users have caused havoc, the military created "witch hunters' to deal with threats. The 35th Test Platoon is a group of misfits in the Anti-Magic Academy, training for the day when they can join the ranks of the hunters.
Recommended Because: While AMA doesn't bring anything new, it is entertaining. The main character isn’t Mister Angst. The supporting cast is quirky (even if they rarely go beyond their tropes), and each is given time to shine. The harem element is present, but not overdone. The plot and world development is interesting. The beginning is a little rocky, going from goofy slapstick to super serious in a second, but finds a good balance after a few episodes.

Title: God Eater
Genre: Survival (Science Fiction)
Format: Series
Content Rating: R (graphic violence, fanservice)
Dub Available:
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll, Daisuki
Brief Description: In 2050, while looking for a new source of energy, scientists develop the Oracle Cell - which quickly grow and adapt, and can consume almost anything. Oracle Cells escape and ravage the Earth, covering the surface with monsters called Aragami (roughly, "wrath of god"). 20 years later, the survivors have retreated behind walled fortress-cities. The only effective weapons against the Aragami are called God Arcs, and the few who can wield them are known as God Eaters.
Recommended Because: God Eater is a very cinematic anime - the way scenes are framed and edited, the over use of super slo-mo (first couple episodes), playing generic pop-rock at times when other music would be more appropriate... binging a few episodes feels like you just watched a movie. The characters are pretty standard, but what sells the show is the incredible animation and world building. It says something when, in a show filled with monsters and kids wielding weapons the size of motorcycles, that the most unbelievable thing is how one lady isn't flashing her nipples any time she moves.

Title: RWBY
Genre: Action (fantasy, science fiction)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: Produced in English
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll, Netflix
Brief Description: On the world Remnant, humans use the mystic element Dust to power machinery and magic, in both everyday life and to battle the creatures called Grimm. At the prestigious Beacon Academy young men and women are trained to become Huntsmen. Students are divided into teams, titled after the student's initials. The series focuses on Team RWBY (pronounced "ruby")
Recommended Because: The phrase "it gets better" has rarely been more appropriate. Season 1 is kinda goofy, but shows potential. In Season 2 it starts to get good - the writing improves, and the fights are staged better. S2 also includes a few shorts that explain some of the lore of the world. Season 3 gets REALLY good - the writing is excellent, the action gripping, and the lore shorts have a delightful fairy-tale style.

Title: Schwarzesmarken
Genre: Science Fiction (Mecha, Survival)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 (graphic violence)
Dub Available:
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: In 1973 the alien BETA land in central Asia and quickly spread. To fight them humans develop Tactical Surface Fighters. In 1983 East Germany has become the front lines in Europe, and their elite TSF squadron is the 666th, Schwarzesmarken (Black Marks).
Recommended Because: Based on the Muv-Luv series of visual novels, Schwarzesmarken is a side story in the earlier years of the invasion. While the enemy is the BETAs and they are an ever present threat, the real antagonists are fellow humans who put greed, national pride, and hunger for power ahead of uniting to save humanity. Add in pre-unified Germany politics and the situation is very tense. While not without problems, Schwarzesmarken balances action, politics and harem tropes better than Total Eclipse (another Muv-Luv anime).

Title: Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse
Genre: Science Fiction (Mecha, Harem)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 (graphic violence, fanservice)
Dub Available:
Streaming Available: Crunchyroll
Brief Description: In 1973 the alien BETA land in central Asia and quickly spread. To fight them humans develop Tactical Surface Fighters. By 2001 most of Asia has fallen. In Alaska, Project Prominence is conducted, a multi-national program to develop and test the next generation of TSFs.
Recommended Because: Based on the Muv-Luv series of visual novels, Total Eclipse is a side story in the later years of the invasion. TE is a bit of a mixed bag. The first 2 episodes are a prologue, set in '98 during the defense of Japan. It focuses on a TSF pilot in training and her class as they battle both panic and the BETA, the tensions growing higher as the students numbers dwindle. It is brutal, graphic, and deadly serious. These 2 episodes alone are highly recommended.

Then the main story begins, and the tone completely shifts. As Project Prominence is about testing new TSF systems, far behind the front lines, the BETA are hardly seen. The girl from the prologue is now an elite pilot, but is secondary to the main character - a male American test pilot, who soon becomes the center of the harem trope. Fanservice abounds, with the women in skin tight uniforms and camera angles focusing on breasts and butts. The animation and action scenes are top notch, though. While the main arc of Total Eclipse isn't bad, it does pale in comparison to the prologue.

Title: Yona of the Dawn
Genre: Fantasy (adventure)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Crunchroll, Funimation, Hulu
Brief Description: Yona is a princess who has lead a sheltered life, thanks to her pacifistic father, till a coup forces her to flee. With her trusted friend and bodyguard at her side, she travels to find the reincarnations of legendary dragons to take back her kingdom.
Recommended Because: What makes Yona special is the development of the character. She's a nice person, but used to a pampered life. As the series progresses, and she learns about life outside of the castle, she gradually toughens up and gains courage, discovering the inner strength she didn't know she had.

Title: Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
Genre: Adventure (Fantasy)
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG (violence)
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Netflix, Hulu
Brief Description: Balsa is an elite warrior, in a world where such is rare for a woman. One day she saves a noble child from drowning, to find out he’s the Mikado’s second son. His mother hires Balsa to be his bodyguard as the prince has been targeted for assassination, because it’s believed he’s possessed by a demon. On the run, Balsa and Prince Chagum struggle to survive, while also trying to uncover the mystery of the spirit within him.
Recommended Because: Based on the series of novels, Moribito is filled with excellent storytelling, complex characters, fantastic art, and gripping action. Episodes can range from near constant action to slice-of-life, yet very little is filler as nearly every episode advances the plot or shows character growth, or both.

Title: Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid
Genre: Fanservice (action, comedy, yuri)
Format: Series
Content Rating: R (nudity, and lots of it)
Dub Available:
Streaming Available: Daisuki, Funimation
Brief Description: The mysterious A-Virus has infected girls from around the world, which grants them special powers. The girls are divided into Exters, who can transform into weapons, and Liberators who can wield them. The trick is that the Exters must be sexually aroused to transform.
Recommended Because: If you haven’t guessed already from the above, Valkyrie Drive is fanservice, pure and simple. The whole point is to watch huge breasted girls get naked and have sex. What makes this show stand out is that it knows what it is, and dives right in with a high amount of camp and humor. Even in the later episodes when it has some actual plot it never takes itself too seriously.

New obsession on Netflix is The Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Taizai). Have watched almost all the episodes in the last two days.

So having caught up in RWBY....it got better. And that thing at the end of season 3? Totally didn't happen.

Nope...

oooh, new discovery.

Title: Spice and Wolf
Genre: Drama? Romance?
Format: Series
Content Rating: PG-13 ( Language, "Barbie doll" nudity )
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: Crunchy Roll, VRV, Season 2 on Netflix ( Or was at one point. Don't know if it still is )
Brief Description: Holo the Wise Wolf is a wolf "god" that blessed a village's wheat fields for many centuries. Over time, humans made developments that rendered her aid unnecessary and the bargain they struck with her faded away. Eventually, she decides to travel to her home in the North, and drafts the help of a talented travelling merchant, Craft Lawrence, to travel with her.

The series follows the pair's journey and the business intrigue they encounter through the course of Lawrence's dealings. And over the course of their travels, they find the bond between them growing stronger.
Recommended Because: I enjoy this series because it's a low-key, relaxed show. There's drama and some light action, but it's not the big action adventure. And, yet, it's still engaging.

Magical Girl animes that are not for children. Aka my favorite genre.

Title: Magical Girl Raising Project (Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku)
Dub Available: No
Streaming Available: CR
Brief Description: Magical Girls are forced kill each other (and a few innocent bystanders) in a Battle Royale beatdown. It was quite disturbing in places, and I regularly found myself biting my pillow in rage. That's probably what the show was designed to do, though, so hats off. My only real criticism is that it spends three episodes setting up the premise where one would have sufficed.

Expect (warning: don't even look at the titles of the recommended vids):
phpBB [media]

Title: Yuuki Yuuna Is A Hero (Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru)
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: CR
Brief Description: Four girls in a school club are drafted by the government to fight existential threats on a metaphysical plane. They're not thrilled, but it's their civic duty isn't it? The occasionally dull fights are buoyed by excellent animation and a first class soundtrack from MONACA. It's best to think of the show as a rollercoaster, with episodes 1-4 being the part of the ride where you are slowly getting dragged upwards.

Expect:
phpBB [media]

Title: Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya
Dub Available: Yes
Streaming Available: CR
Brief Description: A thousand Sailor Moon doujins asked the same thing: what if they were kinda gay and lewd? Prisma Illya answers this question with aplomb while deftly balancing comedy and drama. Animation quality is high and the fight scenes are better than they have a right to be. While no lolis were harmed in the making of this production, you probably don't want to watch it with friends and family around.

Expect:
phpBB [media]

Title: Flip Flappers
Dub Available: ?
Streaming Available: CR
Brief Description: The best thing about the show is that it has style to spare, and it's easy to forgive its flaws in light of just how great everything looks and moves. The alternate dimension Pure Illusion has an absurdist anything-goes feel, which is sometimes used well and sometimes not. Like Prisma Illya it features a class-s yuri love triangle centered on the main girl, but there are no kissus and the fanservice is classier. Due to the focus on style, plot and character sometimes take a backseat.

Expect:
phpBB [media]

Sure are a lot of high-school slice-of-life shows this season.
