Today, my daughter asked me the one question I hoped to never hear come out of her mouth.

"Why did you have me? You knew you were leaving Dad, so why did you get pregnant with me? It doesn't make any sense."

Even worse, she knew the answer before she asked me the question. I've had 18 years to prepare for that exact question. I knew it would come eventually. You think I'd have prepared a better answer than, "God knew I needed you."

So about 2 weeks ago, I started having pain in my abdomen. When and saw the doctor about it, and he gave me some medicine and then set me up to go see a liver specialist.

Today, I saw him and was diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the liver. There are two stages of Cirrhosis, compensated and decompensated. The former meaning your body can work through the damage, the latter meaning the damage is too much for your body to work through. The first signs of decompensated Cirrhosis is fluid in the abdomen.

So right now, I'm angry and a little scared. I'm having to give up one of my collections and hobbies, but if it that choice or more damage, its a no brainer.

Well, it's been a fun month.

12/30: Woke up at 3AM with severe chills, fever, dizziness. By 8AM I was stable enough to drive the rest of the way home. Lower left leg was starting to turn red and hurt, signs of the cellulitis infection I've had there before. Checked into urgent care at about noon. Within half an hour of checking in, I'd passed out in the waiting room, scaring my wife half to death. Got wheeled back to a room as an ambulance was called to take me to the ER. Passed out 1 more time before I was loaded onto the ambulance.

Got to the ER, started getting pumped with antibiotics and blood drawn. Turns out the cellulitis had gone septic. Yes, in less than 12 hours since the first signs of fever. Doc said I had the highest white cell count he'd seen all week. 5 days of antibiotics being pumped into me before I was discharged from the hospital with another 10 days of pills to take. Follow up appointment on the 1/17, I was cleared by the NP to return to work, but had to go through hoops with the company that handles my job's medical leave to get them to authorize me. Needed to get full medical records from my stay sent to them. I don't hear back from them until the following monday. Need a new DOT exam. I get that set up and the examiner won't sign off until my return to work note is signed by an actual MD, not an NP. Then it needs to specifically say I'm clear to drive a commercial vehicle without restriction and I have a follow up appointment. Got that. Physical is signed off on. Get a call, a box is checked wrong, I have to go back to the clinic to get that fixed. Sent that in yesterday evening, now they will look over it "some time today".

All in all I've missed a month of work because of this. Fortunately, I had 2 weeks' vacation pay I could cash in, but finances are still tight and they're taking their own sweet time getting back to work. I get it, sepsis is no joke. I could have died. But....I'm better and I've got rent to pay, yanno?
