And I'm Not Dead!

Post by Lyah » 05/30/17

tl;dnr; I was very sick, nearly died, I'm back.

I'm back after nearly dying of septic shock. No joke hospital staff were seriously concerned I might not make it through night 1. If I had waited another 24 hours, I'd have been dead. Whatever it is was exotic. I've been tested for multiple forms of influenza, Legionnaires' disease, spinal meningitis, strep, etc. All we do know for sure is that I got a fungal infection, which lead to a bacterial infection, which lead to a viral infection, which lead to an overloaded immune system that went into septic shock. All if which, I should note, probably happened because I scratched my leg on an airplane and got exposed to something which my body just had no defense against.

In the past 24 hours, I've had needles shoved in every inch of my body, CAT scan, echo cardiogram, ultrasound on my veins to make sure none of them had collapsed, lung function tests, been seen by a team of three infectious disease specialists and two doctors of internal medicine, and... oh hell, it just goes on. Thankfully, once you get past the hump of septic shock, there's nothing left to do but go home and take it easy, and so I am.

The one thing to add on top of that was that while being taken into the emergency room, I went right past where they took my roommate Paul, who died in my arms as I was trying to save him with CPR. People who know me well know I have never gotten over that, and when I was at my worst point, going right past where I had to identify his body.... oh man did I just lose my shit. Not a good time to relive past trauma.

Heh, and then later on that night... I went into histoxic hypoxia. I've never had a more terrifying sensation in my life as breathing in as deeply as possible, and getting... nothing. It was like drowning without the water. Because of the overload in my bloodstream I just wasn't getting enough air, but now I know what dying of cyanide poisoning feels like.

Good grief! When it rains it pours, doesn't it? Good to hear it all came out alright.

Jesus fucking christ.

I am extremely glad you are still with us. That is a lot of fucked up shit to happen to one person. I am so sorry. Please take it easy and don't push yourself. Even if you're out of the woods, it takes a long time to recover from illness of that magnitude.

Don't hesitate to reach out either, should you need something. Is anyone there with you? Are you able to take time off from work?

So this was going to be a PM. I decided at the last moment that it wouldn't be. As I want to be sure that this is read. And I want other people to read it as well.

When the Raven Mythic was down last weekend, I knee-jerk gasped as I typically do. "RAVEN DOWN!" I mean what do we do if the Raven is down for maintenance? Well. We find something else to do until that improves. Though I appreciated (surprised, actually) that you took time to fix the matter and bring it back up.

However, this also gave me pause for concern at the same time.

You shared with us that you were near death and that is not a small thing.

It's been my experience here at the Raven that when one of our number dies suddenly - even if we don't know one another directly - we collectively mourn. Rather passionately. I honestly don't know what the hell would happen, Lyah, if you had dropped dead a few weeks ago. But we would all have to figure it out, now wouldn't we?

From what you've described, I can only assume that you're still recovering? But, are you? Are we, generally speaking, letting you?

Regarding gaming, I sincerely hope that you know that it's okay to step back from administration and moderation. To focus solely upon this recovery? Be it here at the Raven, Pony Square, EVAN or elsewise. We can't game with you if you're dead. Just sayin'.

At this point my only expectation from you is that you actually do take care of yourself.

Your friend, Grant

Late to the thread, but, yikes. So glad your okay. Definitely take care of yourself before even worrying about anything here. I know I haven't been as involved here as I was back in the day, but I still care what happens. Thanks for taking the time to tell us, now focus on getting better.

Some of us understand, Lyah, that you've been fighting off another bought of this. I'm thankful to hear you are home from a recent hospital stay. For those Raven users who don't visit Shout Box, how is your current recovery coming along?

And yeah... it all came back and happened again.

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection involving the inner layers of the skin. It specifically affects the dermis and subcutaneous fat. In my case, what started as a mild infection exploded into a massive super-colony of flesh-eating bacteria full-on tried to devour my leg. Came home from work Tuesday (Day 1) night feeling fine, and over the course of two hours, was slammed down by a temp of 104 degrees. I spent the night drinking lots of water, and not really noticing anything about my leg. Day 2 I could feel my left leg was giving me more pain than anything else, and should have panicked right then, but I did not. On Day 3, I went to see my normal doctor who looked at my left leg for all of 30 seconds and told me to get to the emergency room RIGHT NOW. So off I went.

Here's a link to pictures I took while in the hospital, be warned, this is some nasty shit:

Apparently this time it was so bad I was within just a few hours of them deciding they had to fucking AMPUTATE MY LEG. They didn't tell me until after the danger was passed and I was being released, but yeah, it got that bad. I'm so very happy that did not happen.

Over the course of 9 days in the hospital, I lost about 50 lbs in body weight, which is a terrifying loss in so short a time. Plus side.... I couldn't smoke, and I'm out, and somewhere into Week 4 of not having had a cigarette. I plan on keeping it that way.

So I have to ask, what about that necrosis on your leg? I assume that never recovers and has to slough off at some point?

Is it medically possible for scar tissue to grow into place of that necrosis? Which I would certainly take over amputation or death.

It will recover. I'll re-grow the tissue, and right now I'm doing what is called "wet wound" healing, which means that rather than letting the wound scab and scar over, it's healing wet, under bandages, which is allegedly faster, and won't produce scar tissue.

I won't come out of this with, like, some visible hunk of flesh missing. Thankfully the phage just attacked skin and fat cells, not muscle tissue.

That's actually pretty close to what I went through with mine around the first of the year. Woke up in the middle of the night with severe chills. Made the drive the rest of the way home and went to see an urgent care clinic. In the waiting room, I passed out. They wheeled me back and called an ambulance and I passed out again while the EMTs were there. Spent more than 12 hours in the ER before getting a room, where I stayed several days. I was down for a month before I could work again. Cellulitis, which is a reoccurring problem on the same leg about once a year for the past few years. This time it went septic. Blisters and all, ugly green before the skin finally peeled. The leg is still discolored from it. Worst part is the doctors can't pin down WHY I keep getting the infections. Best they can tell me is wear compression socks and try to walk more....

Yeah, it's no joke. You definitely appear to have gotten it worse. Just the lower leg for me, didn't hit the foot... And didn't blister quite that bad. Glad you've gotten through it. Team "my leg wants to murder me", eh?

I hate that I wasn’t around to hear about this and try to offer some sort of support. I am glad you came through okay and I hope it continues to get better. I can’t imagine going through something like this. Much love to you, Lyah.
