(( OOC Message: Any potential sites of activity, etc can be investigated, etc... If you wish to get involved, contact me. NPC's were essentially kidnapped out of Kelethin/Greater Faydark... There was an apparent incident in the Commonlands. Please enjoy... ))

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Thaydryn come see me. Bring Vashri with you...” The Matriarch's unsettling whisper moved across the crystals.
A squeal of excitement echoed from the child's room. Marchosia looked up at her mate as she nursed one of the twins, “Mother is home and has work I see...” The look on the bardessa's face was worried and troubled though.
The assassin leaned in and kissed his mate then his nursing son, “She will be safe. You know that.”
“I just wish...” She let it drop. They both knew it was easier to reverse Norrath's rotation than to change Mother's mind.
“It will be fine, M. She already told Vashri that she would take my place when I was ready to step down. She is at the age of understanding. It is time to begin her training. Mother will see it happens. You know this.”
She smiled ruefully up at him as the child bursts into the room, “DADDY!!! GRANDMOTHER WANTS TO SEE US!” The yelling startled the twins who both began to cry. Both parents sighed. The nursing twin settled right away. Thaydryn turned and gathered up his other son in his arms to calm him. The young girl's eyes widened, “Oops! Sorry!”
“Vashri... you need to learn to be more quiet. We are supposed to work in silence and shadows.”
“Sorry,” she looked up at him contritely.
He set his now settled son down in the cradle and looked back to her, “Let's go. We don't keep Grandmother waiting.”
Father and daughter headed off through halls of the compound. Vashri all but skipped along excited to finally being able to do something for Grandmother with her father. As they moved deeper into the complex, her stride became more sober likely in response to the changes around them. The smell of Jeirah's cooking waned and was overpowered by hyacinth and myrrh. Her birds in ones and twos appeared here and there. Their numbers growing the deeper they tread. Even the powerful and cloying funerary scents gave way to the smell of death, blood, fear, rot, and decay as they entered her sanctum. Her birds roosted everywhere spectators to the goings on.
The Matriarch watched as one of the undead stirred the contents of the cauldron. The bird perched on her shoulder squawked loudly at the pair. “Shush... don't be rude.” She scolded the bird. It fluttered over to the desk watching intently. She handed Thaydryn a pouch with three darts. He took one out looking at the dark viscous purple liquid then looked back to his mother in law. The whispers of the dead carried her voice to him, “Use those darts to bring down a Tunarian Highborne priest or priestess, and a male and female elf – Highborne or halfbreed should work - similar in stature to you and Marchosia. I want them all delivered here. Do not acquire any from Felwithe, however. They are corrupted sheep of Mistmoore and will not do. Only use the dart to bring them down. I need them alive and undamaged.”
He consider those instructions a moment. She had been busy and had kept him busy since her meeting with her brother in the Steppes. He quickly dismissed the obvious inquiry though. She would not answer before she was ready anyway. “Of course, Mother. Anything else?”
She dropped several pieces of marzipan wrapped in wax paper into Vashri's waiting hand. “No, Ussta Mzilst Khalessev*. Return swiftly. I have much to do.”
Excitement and marzipan had her wound up tight, and had she been at home she'd have been bouncing off the walls and annoying her mother. But she was not at home, she was out in the Faydark with her father lurking in some bushes. This was the real thing, serious business, and she knew better than to mess about. Her father was silent and still as he watched the comings and goings of the people up and down the ramp to Kelethin. Vashri mimicked him, and remembered what Grandmother had asked for.
"Daddy..." she whispered as soft as she could, then pointed towards a petite half elven woman. He glanced at Vashri then followed her point. He studied the target for moment then nodded agreement with a slight smile. He loaded his crossbow with one of the darts and raised it, keeping it aimed on the woman while he had a quick glance around to see that no one would see her fall. Satisfied, he released the dart and the woman staggered a few steps then dropped unconscious to the ground. With another quick glance around, her father darted out of the bushes and over to the fallen woman before grabbing an arm and dragging her back with him to their hiding spot. It was all over in a matter of seconds.
Silently he handed Vashri some rope and a rolled length of cloth. She knew what he was asking her to do as they had discussed it on the way. He helped her roll the female onto her front, then let her get on with it. Vashri pull both hands to the back then sat on her, using her weight to hold her hands in place as she carefully bound them with the knot that she had practised to perfection. She then immediately got off, so to not restrict the woman's breathing. Grandmother wanted them alive and well. By the time she finished tying the gag, Thaydryn had let loose a second dart and was dragging a male back into their thorny den. The male being a lot larger, her father helped her manoeuver the male and hold his arms so that she could bind him too.
With both elves secured and hidden, father and daughter crept out of the bushes and deeper into the hollow below Kelethin to Tunare's Spring. They stopped behind a rock and Thaydryn grinned at his daughter and made some gestures with his hands. ~ Lucky today ~ Vashri was still learning, but the meaning was clear, and confirmed when she peeked around the rock to see a Koada'Dal priest collecting water from the blessed pool alone. One again, Thaydryn's aim was true, but this time he handed Vashri a tinkered device. He signed again, despite there being no one around. She needed to learn after all. ~ Use wormhole. Take him to Grandmother. I will get the others. ~
The girl nodded and scurried over to the Priest. She pressed the button on the gadget to activate the worm hole. She knew she only had a moment before it closed again, so she grabbed an arm and hauled him with all her might, using the gravity of the wormhole to help her pull him through and clear to land with a soft bump at the destination. The portal closed, but reopened a moment later with her father pulling the other two through. When it closed behind him, Vashri just grinned.
Ezyaathe, Mylthar, and Tebirahc were waiting at the druid ring area with their mounts. The carrion dogs were making a meal of a couple of Militia guards a short distance from the druid ring. The three warriors swiftly loaded the unconscious bodies laid across their mounts and secured them. Thaydryn quickly began covering up the evidence on the ground. The earth below them began to rumble. Ezyaathe looked everything over, nodded, and made several gestures. The trio of fighters encouraged their steeds to take flight as the rumbling drew closer. A pair of green and purple twinkles chittered ahead of the oncoming rumble from either side of rings as a portal opens. The two arasai darted through. Thaydryn grabbed Vashri’s hand and pulled them through the portal as a stampede of rhinos meets a stampede of elephants at the druid rings. After one final teleport provided by their house crystals, they arrived at the compound in Freeport and made their way to the Matriarch’s sanctum.
The scent of blood, fear, and death hung heavily in the room as the sea of shadows boiled and writhed. The Matriarch watched in silence with her hands neatly folded in front of her attended by the house priests. Ezyaathe closed the cage doors and threw the locks for the two elves. They were left in their cells bound and gagged. The likelihood of them waking up from the sedative was slim. However, one could never be too careful and the Lady Ryujin’s wrath would be terrible if one escaped. Mylthar and Tebirahc finished up securing the unconscious Koada priest to the vivisection table.
The necromancer settled her attention on Thaydryn and Vashri, “Thank you.” Several more wrapped pieces of marzipan were deposited in the young girl's hand as she addressed the assassin, “I will need you again soon.”
“Of course, Mother,” he nodded his head and left further inquiries alone... ...for now. He turned his attention to his daughter, “Vashri, time to go check on your brothers, sister, and mother.” He stated it like this is a part of everything he had been teaching her.
The Matriarch began to chant as she prepared her work space in earnest and with great attention. Two of the house priestesses assisted by stripping all three captives of all belongings and clothes. The caged pair were chained and remained gagged. The one on the vivisection table got further attention. They removed the priest's tongue healing it immediately to prevent choking. Next, the two priestess each donned a pair of protective gloves and grabbed an ewer. They poured a thick, aromatic, oily substance on the body making sure to be thorough. They moved out of the way and made ready for their next task. They needed to keep the Tunarian priest alive as the Necromancer harvested bones and then wrangle his soul when his being alive ceased to matter to the Matriarch.
The ritual was long and taxing, but quite satisfying for the Lady Ruyjin. She managed to make the priest renounce his faith and embrace the depths of his hatred before she allowed him to slip from his mortal coil. His soul wailed contained in soul jar for now. The priestesses were dismissed to rest as they would be needed again soon. Lady Ryujin remained contentedly seeing to her next preparations. Of his body, nothing was left to waste. Everything would eventually be used in some fashion. In the moment, the bones were what the Matriarch required. She carefully selected the ones she needed and started the process of preparing them. She then turned her attention to the caged and terrified pair's personal belongings. Undead minions carried in two cauldrons filled with a vile, black, bubbling, tarry substance. Their belongings were dumped into the cauldrons. A foul and sickening odor quickly emanated from the cauldron. With a nod, she settled into her sitting area for tea as she continued some research.
Having dutifully relayed the appropriate responses prepared by her father to her mothers questions, Vashri managed to escape when they were distracted by her twin infant brothers. Babies had their uses she was realising. She retraced their steps back to her Grandmothers complex. The ravens lining the path watched her, but she didn't care. She knew that sneaking up on Grandmother was impossible as she slipped quietly through the doors - doors which would have been locked if the Matriarch wanted no intrusions at all.
The girl sidled along the wall a bit until she could find a good view point. If anyone had noticed her enter, they did not show it. They were too intent on their ritual and Vashri turned her attention to that. While the child had often sneaked out to follow her father and seen him do some really gory stuff, what her Grandmother was doing now was far grosser. Her expression shifted into a silent 'Eeeew', but she made no sound and continued to watch with morbid curiosity.
The Priestesses were dismissed and walked out, eyeing the child as they passed but they said nothing. When they were gone she shifted her position a bit to see the remaining elves in their cage. They were naked now, but still bound. She turned her attention back to her Grandmother when she heard heavy things being deposited on the ground. She watched as the elves clothes and belongings were added to the two cauldrons and wrinkled her nose at the putrid smell they caused. Then Grandmother went and sat down for tea.
The smell was disgusting, but as far as she was concerned she was vested in these elves. They were her first mission and she wanted to see what happened to them too. So she slid down the wall into a sitting position to wait.
A solid hour had passed when Thaydryn entered with Nirim bound and gagged. The Matriarch looked up as he entered. Her birds settled in the massive aviary. A darker look than usual appeared on her face. The teenage male looked up at his Aunt in genuine terror. All in the house knew the stories. It was only a matter of time. Her voice was carried on the whispers of the dead and laced with an extra measure of contempt as she condemned the boy. “Your father's binding was not sanctioned merely tolerated. You are another of My Honored Brother's bastards.” The boy began to fruitlessly struggle against his bonds. “Worse, you are an abomination like your mother. You are not even Fallen. You would have needed faith and purity of blood for that. Your mother's weak willed nature dominates you. You are unworthy to be a priest of this house. Certainly, you are unworthy of the Ryujin blood that flows through you.” She got to her feet. “Put him in the center of the aviary.”
The assassin nodded and dragged the bound teenager to the center of the aviary as two of the other house priests entered. The priests dragged the male out of cage and secured him to the vivisection table. Thaydryn returned to the Matriarch who had moved to her work area once more, “Mother, do you need anything else?” There was a sudden cacophony as her murder of ravens descended on the bound boy in a mass of shadows and inky black feathers.
“Not at the present, Ussta Mzilst Khalessev. Soon.” She watched an undead minion used a pitcher to capture some of the vile liquid in the cauldron, “Seek some well deserved rest.” The minion handed the pitcher to one of the two priests. The other removed the captive's tongue healing it immediately. With the assistance of a funnel, the captive was forced to consume the liquid from the pitcher. The assassin nodded and exited leaving her to her necromancy. At first the captive male struggled, but eventually he stopped. He was very much alive and awake, but paralyzed.
Maelthra manifested just outside the aviary wrangling in his half brother's soul with little effort. The Shaman of Hate turned his attention to his mother and intently watched in silence as the priests released the restraints. As before the priests donned gloves, picked up ewers, and poured the thick, aromatic, oily substance on the captive making sure to be thorough. Once that was done, Lady Ryujin laid out her tools for flaying. The priests began their chant as she began hers. The process of flaying the male was long and required meticulous attention to the detail. The skin was placed in a casket filled with an aromatic fluid.
The priests renewed their chanting as a loud crack echoed through the room. She opened the male's chest. She chanted as she careful and precisely carved runes into the male's heart. It took some time, but eventually she was done and the priests moved the body to the cauldron where male's belongings had been dumped. Maelthra utters his own chant tethering the male's soul to the contents of the cauldron. The Matriarch added several of the prepared bones from the Tunarian priest to the liquid as well.
With that complete, the priestesses from the previous night returned replacing the priests. The procedure was repeated with the female captive. Several hours later, Lady Ryujin was done. She returned to her sitting area, fresh tea just delivered, and the tome she was using for research. The birds had stripped Nirim down to nothing except bone which were left in the pile with the rest.
Unmarked letters delivered by a person unseen and unnoticed.
  • Letter 1: Obvious copies of a Birth and Death certificate.
    Letter 2: Obvious copies of a Birth certificate and missing person's report.
    Letter 3: Obvious copies of a Death certificate.
Morenin N'Tal rarely showed emotions beyond pride and rage in public. But once he'd closed the door and gone up to the bedroom he shared with his wife, he sagged against the door. The dark half elf stared down at the death certificate with a touch of fear rising. Not a holy Fear of his god, Thule, but a base fear. Someone knew his secret, someone outside the clan. He knew that he could be executed, but his bigger fear was loss of his position within the Third Calvary, his standing in Freeport. The effect it would have on his wife and son.
Someone knew... but who? And what did they want, was the question.
Not much phased the Vice Commander these days, but her hands shook holding the certificates. One for a birth, and one for a death mere days later. They were copies, the fancy filigree that had adorned the originals was not present, but it was the information they held that shook her. It had happened over 600 years ago. Before the Rending, before the Shattering, how could these records still exist?
"Something wrong?" Ivanson asked from the breakfast table?
Tajar startled, then quickly folded them up and tucked them into her breastplate. She kept very little from her husband, but this had been one of them. In fact, no one knew. It had been a fairly routine ritual back then, but it was the fact that someone knew the significance of this particular child. It meant that someone beyond herself, her mother, and Jetamyo now knew. Someone else knew who she was.
"It's just work, I need to go in early." She answered, plastering a smile on her face. "Why don't we go to the Manor this weekend? Take the children and I'll come after work."
She was taking no chances. Someone might simply be wanting to embarrass her, but it might also be Neriak's crazy Queen being alerted to her continued existence and come after her and her family. Kissing Ivanson goodbye, she hurried out the house.
The envelope lay neat as you please in the middle of her patio, causing an eyebrow to raise as Inqe studied it's position. Certainly it had been placed to get her attention, so thus it had. To her amusement it was also placed far from Bitey, the carnivorous plant that lived in the patio garden. "Did someone disturb your rest, my pet?" Absently she stroked it's petaled maw before reaching to pick up the envelope. The paper was good, but not too good, and rather plain, despite the elegance of the writing of her name on the front.
The plant curled a frond around her ankle as she sat on the edge of it's planter to open the envelope, the frond withdrew as it's mistress stilled upon pulling out two papers. There was not a letter with the papers, nor were they 'official' copies, but they were definitely from the originals, she had seen those herself. "Neriak is perhaps too dependent on it's record keeping." She refolded the papers thoughtfully. "At least they could not copy the blood stains on the birth certificate, Bitey, though the ones on the originals were accepted as truth at the time."
Inqe rose and fed the plant, wondering who had been going through old birth records, and then why had they gone to the effort to pull out the missing persons report her late, and very unlamented, uncle had made when her adopted parents had her spirited away years later for training as a druid? Granted their choice of where she was to be taught and the moving of her there had been done very quietly. She had not known about the report until after the House war that decimated House Ki'Thas.
The Priestess that replaced her uncle as head of the Temple used it as evidence in her decision to not execute the children that brought about her rise to power, stating it proved V'Keot's instability. Inqe had a suspicion that the woman knew who she really was and had a further hand in the young Ki'Thas' exile to Freeport. Who would not want out of the city a pair of younglings that proved more dangerous, or troublesome that most? Inqe's lips curved upwards, granted the next few years saw the fortunes, and lives, of the surviving members of House V'Keot decline rapidly. No, the Priestess would not have wanted either her, or Melidran, to remain in Neriak.
She tapped a corner of the envelope against her lips, the blood stains on the original birth certificates for her, and the infant cousin born the same day would match her and that long ago sacrificed to Innoruuk child. What they did not match were the acknowledged parents on those certificates. As far as Inqe knew only a few people knew of the switching at birth of the two babies, and all but four of them were dead. Pynne, who was still officially listed as her Aunt, Melidran, the Dame, and herself. All right, Torryn probably knew, but he was never involved in the politics of Neriak. She herself had not been informed of the switch until she was a full adult, and then only to further more House plotting.
As far as the Temple was concerned a child of Ki'Thas blood had been sacrificed, no matter that it was not the one her uncle had intended, so who still cared about his obsession to possess her? Nor was she officially missing anymore. Inqe had ascended to her room by this time and tossed the envelope with the copies inside on the small alter to Erolissi that stood outside her sleeping chamber. She did have less dry secrets to keep these days, but it was still troubling. Some zealots would not appreciate her escape from the sacrifice even if that escape had been entirely out of her control. No, better to keep old secrets, secret.
((A log of relevant RP between Morenin and his wife, Lolly.))
*Lolly manages to make it home early enough to help out with dinner and to dress up in one of her favorite yellow dresses while she waits for Morenin to come home*
*Morenin drags in after his patrol, dumping his helmet and gauntlets on the couch as he passes with distracted carelessness*
*Lolly frowns and picks up after him* Morenin?
*glances over his shoulder, on his way up the stairs* Yes, love?
*handful of helm and gauntlets, she follows* Is everything alright?
"...fine. It's fine. *He tries to smile at her and starts walking up the stairs*
*she follows rather silently behind him, not speaking again until he gets to their room* Did I do something? You'd tell me if I did something, wouldn't you?
*he sighs* Of course you didn't do anything. Close the door, will you?
*she closes the door behind herself and sets the helm and gauntlets in their normal spot before sitting on the bed* Is there something that I was supposed to do?
So...*she purses her lips and watches him* I don't want to be that naggy wife that tries to stay unhappy...but you haven't been yourself.
Ah? *he turns to look at her as he works on the ties of his armor*
*she stands and helps him with the ties* If it doesn't have anything to do with me...what does it have to do with?
I got a letter I find... threatening. *he finally says*
Who sent it? *her demeanor switches to be more professional*
I don't know...
What was threat?
*He shakes his head, going to his desk and unlocking it, offering her what appears to be the death certificate for a N'Tal woman*
*she reads it and looks confused* I...I don't understand, Love. Why would someone send you this?
Because they found out she was murdered, is my only guess."
And you've been worried about it. *she wraps her arms around him* What can I do?
There's nothing that can be done. If I'm brought to trial and convicted...
*her grip tightens* I can't accept that. Can't we...isn't there a way to handle this?
We could wait and see what demand follows, though it galls me.
If...what if we find out who did this?
We could kill them. But we risk the information being released on their death, whoever they are.
*she grumbles* People always think that being an assassin means solving problems. I'm not as good of a problem solver as I want to be.
*he hugs her* We'll figure it out. We should pray to Thule for a solution.
Maybe a sacrifice? I won't lose you, Morenin.
Yes... we'll make a pilgrimage to the Shard of Fear, and sacrifice to the Lord. *he nods at her*
*she rests her face against his chest* Can I ask something?
Yes, love. *holding her close*
How long have you known about this?
Since yesterday. That's when it arrived.
*she hugs him again* How long do you think it will be before something else happens?
I have no idea. I assume there will be a follow up.
Will you tell me when it happens?
*sighs* If you wish. I didn't want to worry you.*she tilts her head to gaze into his eyes* I would rather know. I'm in this together with you.
*he nods* All right, love.
*she smiles brightly at him* Until then...we should try to enjoy the peace we have. Do you want to make the arrangements for our sacrifice, or should I?
Why don't you obtain one, while I make sure we get the day off we need?
Yes, dear. *she leans up for a kiss* Will we bring Trastan?
No... not for this one I think. *he shakes his head*
This kind of thing makes me want to do something impetuous.
That may be the idea... no... I think we need a measured response.
*she mumbles* It made me want a baby...*more clearly* You're right. We shouldn't just go in without any plan.
A young, blonde haired human bardessa approaches Ivanar. “Hello, young sir. You are the Vice Commander’s son?” She smiles as the boy confirms the question. “Would you take this to her?” She holds open a small box with a piece of inscribed bone. The boy hesitates initially. “Please. I have so many deliveries and it is really important. You would really be helping me out. I have some marzipan for you.” This was enough to convince the boy who gladly grabbed up the piece of bone and the offered marzipan. He trotted off for The Rock looking for his mom.
((A log of later that day...))
Morenin is standing in a back corner of the courtyard almost furtively. One hand is clenched as if holding something, then he resumes pacing- something the guards will mention to the other Lt. N'Tal that he's been doing now for over twelve hours.
*Maethor goes over to him. * “Do you want to discuss this here or somewhere more private cousin?”
Morenin jerks around as if about to jump out of his skin. There's a peculiar look in his black eyes, almost... desperate. "If you think I'm going anywhere private with you, think twice!" he snaps, clutching whatever it is harder.
“I see what I was worried about came to pass cousin.”
"I don't know what you're talking about," he snarls and starts to stalk off.
*Catches his arm*
Morenin throws a punch with his off hand, constrained by the fact his other hand is holding something. "I won't go!" He cries out.
*Maethor was ready to dodge as he expected to have Morenin strike out. He moves and lets the blow land on his armor. * "Where in the name of Innorruuk do you think I am taking you. Cousin. I got warned by the guards you were acting irrational and came to find out what is going on!”
"The hell I am, you're working with HER, this is yet another trick!" He's backing away, looking for the space to run.
“The only HER I work for cousin is the Commander. And I came to see what was going on before it needed to be reported to the Commander.”
Morenin doesn't seem to quite hear what he's saying, or at least understand it, wildly tossing out a harm touch before breaking into a run.
*Maethor tackles him knowing that it takes time for a harm touch to recover and is working hard on pinning him down. * “If I need to knock sense into you Cousin. I will.!”
Morenin struggles against him, up close seeming oddly sickly for the usually robust half elf. He refuses to release whatever is in his hand.
*Maethor gets him pinned and then starts to bind his ankles then wrists. As he binds his wrists he pries open Morenin's hand*
Morenin growls, struggling and fighting to keep hold of what looks to be a piece of bone with runes carved into it.
Maethor slams the hand clutching the bone against the ground hard, while Morenin is recovering gets his hand open and drops the bit of bone do the ground and kicks it away from Morenin. *
Morenin screams in pain as his hand is broken, laying there panting.
“Are you back to yourself cousin? Of still being paranoid at me? If breaking bones gets your sanity back... you have a lot of bones and I am patient!”
Morenin doesn't answer yet, shaking as he tries to pull his broken hand back.
*Maethor lets him pulls his hand back watching him carefully. * “If you had let go of the bone I would not have had to break it Cousin." *Makes VERY sure the bone is out of out of Morenin's reach.
Morenin doesn't answer him, reaching for the bone with his good hand now. "I need it...."
“Why?”
Morenin hesitates. "I don't know... I just do..."
“Cousin? If you can tell me a clear reason why need it, I'll listen. But you were acting irrational with it and I broke your hand to get it away from you.”
Morenin hesitates, then lunges for the bone with his good hand.
*Punches him in the Jaw*
“Try that again and I'll break your Jaw also cousin.!”
Morenin is knocked back, rubbing his jaw and looking distinctly unwell, the whites around his black eyes showing.
“Alright enough of this.” *Taps his badge and calls for Ethard. *
Ethard hurries up, takes one look, and appears to want to scuttle away.
“Eth... Is Morenin under a curse....” he says. “Connected to that damn bone?” *Gestures to it*
Ethard looks at it and SQUEAKS. "Um... don't touch that... whatever that is, is necromancy. Strong necromancy. We need Lt. Cheeseeater to look at-" he quickly kicks it away and nearly goes down at Morenin staggers to his feet.
*Punches Morenin again. Trying to knock him out. *
Morenin goes down easily, a sure sign he wasn't in good shape to begin with. Ethard stands there looking... alarmed.
*Hits his badge* “LT Cheeseeater to the courtyard. We have a Necromantic item affecting a knight!”
The guards at the Rock watched in silence as the LC's bookends have their scuffle. Who were they to interfere with officers. It was at least a good fight for the time being. Ethard eventually is called in and joins the fray. When the medic starts calling for LT. Cheeseeater, the guards decide it was time for shift change...
Baxterchen sighed before gathering his belongings and getting dressed. It had been a nice week off spent with his son and mates, but now it would be coming to an end it seemed. Donning his uniform over his body he affixed his badge to his chest before tapping it to respond.
“I’lls be theres shortly” he said before breaking into his usual coughing fit. “In the means times can I gets a descriptions of the object if it is presents? Size, shapes and or any distinguishing markings? And what is it doing to the knight?”
While he waited for he sprinted to his library and grabbed any book about the effects of necromantic artifacts on the living
*Across the Knights communication* "What I can see is a huminoid bone possibly from a wrist or ankle covered in small runes. The energy is necromantic beyond that I am unable to tell. I have not touched it myself and I am currently busy restraining the knight who was holding it and is trying to retrieve it."
"It seems to be a bone not a construct. I'd also prefer not to destroy evidence we may need to show to the Commander."
"I am going to leave it alone until you get here turn it over to you and then get the knight to MMRD."
"If after you have studied it you still think it needs to be destroyed then we can destroy it."
Since wrestling the bone out of her screaming son's hand, she had been reliving her distant past over and over again. The night he had come to her, the long confinement, the birth of a child that should never have been conceived.
She could feel the weight of the heavy silk robes, encrusted with iolite and amethyst. The after-ache of recent childbirth as she was lead to the altar with the infant male in her arms. She lay him on the cold stone as she had seen many do before. Standing silent as he was anointed with holy water before feeling the cold gemmed hilt of a ceremonial dagger pressed into her hand. She raised her arm to bring the dagger down into his heart...
"MOTHER!"
Tajar blinked back the vision to find herself standing over Ivanar, who was shivering and fevered. But he was still aware enough to see the danger of her raised arm. She choked out a gasp and released the letter opener that was in her hand. The dull blade clattered to the ground and Tajar stumbled back. Ivanson ran in at the noise but Tajar turned and fled from the house before another vision overtook her. All the while, her other hand was clasped around the piece of bone.
She had to get away from Freeport. Someone was digging and she had to stop them. To do that she needed to find the very person that she used to run from. The conversation happening across the comms fell on deaf ears as Tajar flew furiously towards Qeynos.
Baxter stepped through the portal into the Rock looking puzzled at Maethor, the restrained knight and the bone. perking a bow he steped slightly closer to examine the bone without touching it, before steeping over to examine the restrained knight.
"was the bone touched Lieutenant?"
Lt. N'tal was holding it. I removed it from his grasp but did not touch it myself.
It got kicked over there to prevent him from getting a hold of it again.
Baxter noded and casted his arcane bindings on Lieutenant N'tal so that he could more easily be restrained and lead for now.
"i'd advises yous to gets him to a holding cells until the effects wears offs or we can finds a way to reverse it. I'm alsos going to needs a cantonment teams." Baxter paused as he broke into one of his sickly coughing fits after a few moments he contained it. "No one is goings to touch that bones until wes figures out what exactly it does. ands i'm going to haves to informs the commanders."
The meeting, like many was seriously boring. At least for her, though she suspected that the undercurrents should have amused her slightly, but on those days the Overlord was not in attendance the ripples of fear and intrigue were half hearted at best. Inqe fiddled with the stack of parchments in front of her considering adding her own bit of a push just to stop the incessant droning of the man who's turn it was to report. She had already taken her turn, mercifully short, to the point, and indicating successes. Across the table one of the ministers began to softly snore and she repressed a giggle.
One of the crystals in her bracelet gave a delicate chime and she twirled it to see which one, the color of glowing stone made her pause. Inqe looked up at the underling that was heading this meeting as she gathered her papers together and picked them up, he too was drowsing and she snorted, stood with a deliberately loud grating of her chair. "I must go, ladies, gentlemen, chairman, thank you for an enlightening, and relaxing, afternoon." She smiled brilliantly at the men who had dozed off, nodded to the one that had been speaking, and swept out to the murmurings of the rest.
Once clear of the room she tapped the glowing crystal. "What is wrong?" The reply was muted, though her frown was not. "Keep looking, I shall be there shortly." Inqe moved as fast as possible through the halls in her long skirts, touching another crystal. "Delenin, one of the children is missing from the orphanage, someone heard her scream, then crashing through the branches." She quieted as he spoke and she navigated a long series of steps without breaking her speed, or her neck. "Yes, I am on my way, but I need to change first." She finally reached the telepad that would move her from the floating citadel to the city below. Not for the first time she grumbled about the rule to appear for all meetings in high dress.
It took precious time for her to get to the Consulate building, change, summon up a portal and finally to step through to the blessed green land that was Kelethin. By now she was openly talking to the crystals, coordinating the search through the woods around the orphanage, when there was a cry of dismay over one, and close enough for her to actually hear. Inqe steered her mount in that direction and came upon one of the many pond that dotted the land. Floating face down in the water was the missing girl, one hand out splayed, the other tightly clenched. "Get her out of there!" She jumped off her mount and ran the last little bit to the edge of the water.
When the girl had been retrieved, Inqe stroked her hair, then shook her head. "She is too far gone, I cannot bring her back." The matron of the orphanage started to weep, but it was Delenin that had the questions.
"This girl knew how to swim, did she really drown? What happened before she screamed?" He turned to look around at those gathering. One of the older boys recalled that she was seen talking to a Fae not long before she started to act oddly. Another mentioned that she had been eating a lollipop before she started to scream, it had been dropped not far from the playground. Delenin sent someone to carefully gather the sweet in case it had been poisoned. He turned in time to see Inqe unwrap the girl's hand to reveal a heavily carved bit of bone. Even as the warning came to his lips, the bone rolled as if bespelled into the Teir woman's fingers and she reflexively caught it.
Inqe closed her hand around the fragment, it felt horribly wrong, but she could not bring herself to drop it. She gasped as if kicked in the stomach, then looked around at the others. "I cannot be found, he is looking for me!" Then with a swift, elegant motion of her other hand a druid portal appeared and she dived through. Delenin cursed soundly not caring who heard and dived in after her.
The rest of her guard and the orphanage staff blinked in surprise as the portal poofed. "What just happened?"
((A log from later, in MMRD))
Morenin is conscious, ungagged, but tied up.
"Cousin, will you *swear word* untie me?"
"Welcome back, Cousin."
"I think. And not yet. Are you still after that damned bone?"
"What are you talking about?"
"What do you last remember cousin?"
"That damned medic of yours refusing to untie me."
"Before that Cousin. *Is beginning to sound annoyed*"
Morenin stiffens. "A nightmare. I don't want to talk about it.".
"What do you remember before that then"
"Trastan... he was angry I took something away from him."
"Do you remember what you took?"
Morenin grimaces. "A piece of carved bone. Not my work.".
"A Wrist bone carved with many small runes?"
I suppose..."
"Do you remember it that well?"
"I remember that it was ugly. Nothing like the bones I carve."
"Lt. Cheeseater has it now, it’s in MMRD labs, if he hasn’t destroyed it."
"Good... it was disgusting looking."
"He has it because I pried it out of your hands a bit over an hour ago Cousin. And you fought me every step of the way."
Morenin just blinks at him.
"You've got to be joking."
"I approached you as you were acting irrational. Tried to get you somewhere more private to find out what was going on. You had something clutched in your left hand. You refused to go anywhere with me and accused me of working for Her… whoever that is and -"
Morenin blinks, then turns greenish.
tried to hit me with a harm touch. I tackled you and pried that bone out of your hand. Ended up tying you up so you would stop going after it. Called Bax because that is out of my league. He has it now."
"If the commander doesn’t know about this already she will be finding out soon. I think your blackmailer just upped the stakes"
Morenin swallows.
"So what do I do?"
"Right now. Recover. I broke bones prying that out of your hand. "
"I'll talk to her first if you want. I will need to report this before Bax does. "
"...fine. Tell her what you need to. I'm... an acceptable loss, but my family..."
Maethor cuffs Morenin.
"She's got a family too Cousin. I think she might be willing to overlook things if you don’t make an issue of it. She has before. This however is an attack on the knights, not just you"
"Also her family home was burglarized and some family stuff a diary and jewelry was taken. I am *pauses* thinking it might be related."
Morenin looks like he wants to rub his head but- still tied up.
Maethor gestures to Doc Horrible. “Safe to unbind him?”
Morenin is nodded to by the Doc.
Maethor unties Morenin.
Morenin rubs the various places that were broken then healed.
“So... was it a dream or wasn't it?"
"I don’t think it was, Cuz."
"I don’t know what you were thinking or feeling but you were not in your own mind."
"What was it then? Is my mother really running around still?"
"No, she was cremated to prevent her from rising."
"I see..."
"So you thought your mother was alive again? That would be a nightmare"
"It was, I assure you."
"What are you going to do next Cuz? Cause I blew any chance of keeping this quiet when I had to call Bax in on this. But I figured I was in over my head."
"I have no idea what to do. Technically I could hang. The best I can do is the truth- my wife killed a kidnapper."
"To protect your son. "
"Yes."
"Cuz? What would the commander to protect her kids?"
"Whether born to or adopted?"
"Yeah..."
Morenin nods slowly.
"Think about that when you talk to her. "
"I suppose I can offer to show her the scars mother left on me. *he says with a grimace*"
"Don’t think you will need to. If she doesn’t know about them she was never a Mantis agent. I suspect she knows stuff about me I've forgotten or wish I could forget"
Morenin nods slowly.
"Anything else Cousin?"
Morenin says, "No... I suppose you'd better go report in."
"She is not on duty yet. I have time."
Morenin rubs his face. "Lolly must be worried...".
"Then go tell her. If you had stayed here much longer I would have had to go tell her what happened'"
Morenin nods slowly. "Thanks, cous.".
( Out of chronological order due to RL)
*Maethor nods to Baxterchen.*
"Agreed, this does need to go to the Commander.I'll report to her after I get Morenin to MMRD. They can deal with him there."
*Picks up the Shadowknight and heads to the MMRD area.*
