The Danger of Cults

Post by Zaniyah » 05/23/16

She was curled up in a ball for a while. When no more noise could be heard she carefully uncurled and looked around. Every movement was painful. She saw Izaren lying motionless in the middle of several cultist’s bodies not far from her. She dragged herself over to him, “Izaren?” Sitting up was not going to be possible. It had been a terrible fight. They had been taken by surprise and dragged into the house. She was also pregnant. She laid her hand on his cheek, “Izaren?” Several tears rolled down her cheeks as she realized, he likely had not survived the fight though he had assured she and the baby did. She found the house crest and rattled off an address in North Qeynos in a shaky voice to whoever was awake and listening, “Please, come help.”

Embara made her way swiftly to the address, Cyrius joining her as she neared it. Concern etched her golden features when she saw her cousin. She knelt down beside her, while giving Cyrius a discreet motion to check Izaren.

"Don't move." Embara said calmly to Zaniyah as she looked her over for any immediately life threatening injuries. She then glanced over at Cyrius, who shook his head sadly at her. The golden woman gave a slight nod of acknowledgement. There would be time to grieve later.

"Your lady friend, she is a healer, yes?"

Cyrius nodded.

"Take Zaniyah to her. I will attend to Izaren."

Cyrius nodded once more. The tall silver scaled male moved over scooped Zaniyah up, gently despite his gruff appearance. With a silent curse at the city's wards inhibiting his flight, he made his way quickly towards the old mansion where he knew Inqe sometimes lurked.

Embara watched them go. She was not keen on strangers helping her cousin, but the Elder was not a fool. Her own magic was protective, not so much restorative. Had she been with them, Izaren may have survived too. But to dwell on such thoughts was foolish. She beckoned over some of the city guards to help her bring Izaren back to the Hold where she would prepare him for his journey to the afterlife.

Zaniyah groaned in pain as she was lifted from the ground. It was everything she could to curl around her own stomach to protect the baby during the assault. Her wings, back and arms bore the brunt of it. She new bones were broken and other damage was done. The baby was safe though. She could feel the child moving around. Once Cyrius had her securely and was on the move, she quietly cried. It was not from physical pain though.

Inqe was indeed at the Mansion having a lively discussion with Solace and Slipps about sutures of all things when Dan bellowed from upstairs. Slipps immediately turned to head upstairs, but Inqe paused a moment. "Solace, prepare for injuries, pregnancy..." The petite Teir concentrated a moment more. "Dan says she is Aerakyn. I sense great grief."

She helped the Koada woman prepare for their patient as Slipps guided Cyrius and Zaniyah down the lift. Once they were in the infirmary, she had Zaniyah set on a bed before moving closer to touch her with gentle hands. "Zaniyah? It is Inqe, may I heal you, and your child as needed?"

Zaniyah nodded. "Yes... I think the baby is ok though. I can feel movement." She was quite pregnant. It would not be too much longer now. The Aerakyn herself though was badly beaten about the back, wings and arms. Broken bones were likely and deep bruises as well. She smiled weakly and sadly at Inqe.

"I will be as gentle as I can, Zaniyah." Inqe smiles faintly as she lays warm hands on the Aerakyn woman, first to determine the extent of her injuries and the health of the child. Her healing warmth spreads through the injured woman as Inqe murmurs a list of her findings to Solace.

"I shall stop any bleeding and encourage the body to absorb the bruising faster. The breaks need to be set and the lacerations sutured. Too much healing energy could affect the child, but I can keep myself well focused." This was said aloud to Zaniyah. "The babe seems well, so let us get you taken care of, then we shall talk." She smiled again.

Solace busied herself getting ready the kits that Inqe named as needed.

She nodded her head at Inqe. There was no fight left in her at the moment not that she would have been difficult. They needed to do heal her properly. She was compliant with all requests made of her. She knew as much as Embara tried to hide it.

Cyrius stood awkwardly in the background. While the mansion was not exactly small, Cyrius was a large Aerakyn and more used to the spacious rooms of their own Hold. But they had no infirmary in the Hold, which needed to be remedied. So he had brought Zaniyah to the only place he knew nearby. Embara had helped these people before and knew they had the facilities.

So for now all he could do was stand back and watch Inqe work on Zaniyah.

True to her word, Inqe was gentle in the setting of bones and sewing of lacerations, each stitch tiny, neat and precise, there would be minimal scaring and wing function would be restored. As she worked the petite Teir also carefully sifted through Zaniyah's memories of the event, in effect gathering evidence that she could pass on, and doing what she could to soften the horror of the attack.

Inqe was not one to believe in removing all the memories, or the pain of them, she knew form experience that this caused larger issues down the road, but she could, and would, put them in perspective to allow for grief to be managed without being crippling. Besides, Zaniyah was pregnant and did not need the extra stress on the baby.

The child was fine, and for this she was greatly relieved considering the damage to the mother. "Cyrius? I have enough to show you, and Embara when she gets here, of the attackers and what happened." Inqe stroked Zaniyah's hair, encouraging her to fall deeper into a healing sleep. "I will give you those memories so you may better direct questions once she awakens." Inqe stepped aside to properly wash up and let Solace do any final bandaging and clean up. "Mother and child will live, the babe suffered no hurt."

Zaniyah offered no resistance to Inqe whatsoever and fell into a deep sleep.

After preparing Izaren's body, Embara had him placed in the chapel for viewing. She knew Zaniyah would want to see him before he was cremated and his ashes returned to the winds. She had not really gotten to know him too well, but he had made her cousin happy and for that she was grateful.

Leaving the room, she asked for Reeka to remain on guard of the Hold lest the attackers return.

Zaniyah slept deep and long due to a combination of Inqe’s magic and all that happened. She opened her eyes and looked around remembering she was in the infirmary. Rather than seeing Izaren, it was her brother, Roesor. He was dozing. She quietly and carefully sat up on the side of the bed and looked around. The soreness came to her attention first. Immediately behind it was a flood of memories causing her to begin to cry all over again. The movement and her crying drew Roesor’s attention. The large red Aerakyn got up and comforted his sister. After she calmed down some and at her request, he helped her up and into the chapel so she could say her goodbyes to Izaren.

It took a bit more time than normally as Zaniyah was not moving at her usual pace. She stood at the side of the body in the chapel. She reached out tentatively and placed her hand on Izaren’s gently then lowered her head. She was caught between the guilt of knowing her choice killed him, but had she not made it her and the baby would have died as well. That would have made his fight futile. Fresh tears started again. Roesor gently guided his sister back to a seat and comforted her in the quiet of the chapel.

It was a quiet and solemn ceremony. Zaniyah was the last to approached Izaren's body. Everyone else had paid their respects and lit some incense. She looked him over then lowered her head and closed her eyes to attempt to stop the tears. There would be none of that. She looked back to the body. She placed a piece of white paper with runes carefully and artfully drawn on it in his hand along with a small pouch of items that might be needed in the Ethenere. She left her hand on his for a moment then stepped back. She lit some incense, stepped back, an lowered her head respectfully as bowing with her pregnant belly would have been awkward. She turned and returned to her spot. Roesor slipped his arm around his sister as Embarah intone the final chat and the pyre was lit.
